Inspiration

Researchers working with the Center for Gene and Cellular Therapies in the Treatment of Cancer – OncoGen in Timişoara, in western Romania, have started testing a Covid-19 vaccine, the center announced. The vaccine is currently meant for laboratory testing on human cells. Nevertheless, if approved, the vaccine will be available at the earliest in fall, but most likely next year.

And this is just an example. After a vaccine is proposed, a very long time is needed for it to be tested and approved.

What it does

This project is intended to provide a rough estimate of the side effects of a vaccine in a much shorter time.

Phase 1

  • simulate what we consider a healthy human cell by its characteristics
  • simulate a vaccine by its properties
  • simulate a human cell infected with a virus for which an already tested vaccine exists
  • simulate a human cell infected with a virus on which an already tested vaccine is applied
  • compare the human cell before (the healthy human cell) and after the vaccine is applied in order to validate the vaccine. Consider the new cell healthy enough

Phase 2

  • simulate a human cell infected with coronavirus
  • simulate a human cell infected with coronavirus on which the above Covid-19 vaccine formula is applied, and other vaccine formulas if available
  • compare the human cell before and after the vaccine is applied in order to validate the vaccine. Is the new cell healthy enough?

What's next for Covid-19 vaccine test emulator

I am only a software engineer and don't have any medical expertise to work on this beyond a certain level, but I am sure many of you do and can help a lot with building every piece of the project. Once done, this project would be able to validate a vaccine in probably weeks instead of years as the current technological progress allows it. And since time is our greatest enemy with Covid-19, let's work on developing this together and make it possible.
