Inspiration
What inspired me to build this was the constant need of having to Google the number of cases and going on different websites each time. I wanted to build a simple application that allows people to easily keep track of what is going on in the world.
What it does
COVID-19 Tracker takes data from different APIs to give a clear picture of the coronavirus and how it is spreading.
How I built it
I built this app completely in Android Studio using different libraries and APIs that I found online.
Challenges I ran into
I'd say one of the biggest challenges I had was completing a hackathon by myself especially since it was my first time. Not having someone guide you as a Big Brother/Big Sister was a little difficult. I didn't really think much of it until the second day when I realized that this is a lot of work for one person to take care of. For future hackathons I plan on creating a well rounded team that could help break the next project into more manageable pieces.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I would say that I am most proud of the turnaround time. I thought that for someone who knew little about Android Development and Java, I was able to get a good start on a project that I can continue in the future, albeit cutting into my daily routines.
What I learned
I believe the strongest thing I learned was working with APIs and JSON files. With the help of a mentor, I was able to get a good grasp on APIs which was by far the toughest part about the project. I think this will also be the most useful takeaway from creating COVID-19 Tracker as I can use things that I learned here in other apps I create in the future.
What's next for COVID-19 Tracker
I would say the next plans would involve cleaning up the bugs and UX. As time wasn't on my side, I had to take some sloppy shortcuts. Afterwards, just implementing more features and making sure it becomes a working product is my next goal.
