Inspiration
The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the vast socio-economic inequities in various communities around the world. While the coronavirus has impacted majority of people and businesses, small scale enterprises have experienced the worst effects. We got inspired to develop this idea when Onyinye expressed the need to connect service providers to clients within their local environs. Also, as a young man living in a lockdown, Henry looked in the mirror and realized he needed a haircut. He had been indoor for over a month and did not have access to a good Barber. He then realized that there could be people just like him looking to get basic services and a lot more service providers looking to provide their services. That was when we knew it was time to move on the idea of the COVID-19 SME web/mobile platform.
What it does
COVID-19 SME is a web/mobile platform designed to connect small and medium scale businesses and individual service providers to real customers as the world faces one of it’s worst pandemic yet.
How we built it
The platform was built using Wordpress. Henry acquired a domain and used a listing Wordpress theme to bring the idea for the platform to reality. Business/ Service providers can create a profile with full details of what they offer and how they can be contacted, while customers search for what they need and contact these businesses/ service providers.
Challenges we ran into
Putting together various categories of businesses and services in one platform was a bit challenging.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- The idea of connecting businesses/ service providers to customers was well achieved.
- The user interface came out great
- Businesses/ Service providers get a dashboard where they can monitor activities they get from interested customers.
- Users can communicate directly within the platform via inbox.
What we learned
- We will need extra resources to reach out to the public to inform them about the platform.
- More research needs to be done on how to help small businesses who engage in physical service deliveries so the spread of the virus can be contained.
What's next for COVID-19 SME
- Launching it to the public (The first trial will be done in Nigeria)
- Slowly rolling out the idea in other African Countries.
