Inspiration

bold As one of our team members is always worried and is always tensed about COVID-19, our team wanted to create something that would show the percentage of someone getting COVID-19 so that people would not need to over react to the situation.

What it does

bold The product will take information like your age, state that you live in, how often you interact with people on a scale of 1-10, if you have any underlying health conditions, and if you traveled out of your state or country in the past 14 days. It takes this information and with algorithms coded by us, and research done by us, the product calculates your cances of getting COVID-19.

How we built it

bold We first started off by using Google Drawings in order to design our GUI application. After we were certain about our design, we did some research off of websites to find the current cases of COVID-19 in different states, and to get background information about this pandemic. Here are the links to the sites we used:

  1. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html
  2. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/cases-updates/cases-in-us.html
  3. https://www.cnn.com/interactive/2020/health/coronavirus-us-maps-and-cases/

After we finished doing the research we went to programming. First, we used the Tkinter Framework in order to create the screen, labels, button, etc. After that with Python we created a class and functions in order to develop the algorithms. The IDE we used was Pycharm.

Challenges we ran into

bold When using Tkinter, we wanted the information to be displayed on the screen but for some reason it kept on being displayed in the console! Obviously we were not happy with this. So we used our problem solving skills and without googling how to display the information on the screen we figured it out ourselves.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

bold Things we are proud of are, as a team of one Elementary school student, one Middle school student, and one High School Freshman, we were able to communicate effectively, and assign each other tasks with completing them successfully. We were also able to successfully complete our very first Hackathon! We were also very surprised that we were able to develop a GUI application!

What we learned

bold We were able to get more fluent in coding in Python. In addition, in order to do this, we forced ourselves to learn Tkinter.

What's next for COVID-19 Risk Predictor

bold Our goal is to one day make this an application that you can use on your iPhone and/or Android Phone.
