Background: Millions of Americans could get COVID-19. Despite social distancing measures, the projected loss of life is 100,000 – 500,000. The morality of COVID-19 is highly driven by respiratory complications. One of the challenges in treating COVID-19 is that, in many cases, by the time a patient feels sick enough to seek care, a large amount of damage to their respiratory system has already occurred. This is because COVID-19 can present as a viral “walking” pneumonia, in which the symptoms are mild compared to underlining damage occurring to the respiratory system. Accurate pneumonia screening would help COVID-19 positive patients get the in-patient care they need earlier, before it is to late. Also, an additional benefit of accurate pneumonia screening is it can help keep patients that don’t need in-hospital care out of our emergency rooms, reducing the risk of our healthcare system being overwhelmed.

Our Solution: We will detect pneumonia before it becomes too late to treat it in COVID-19 positive patients. We will develop a smartphone application that uses smartphone sensors to accomplish this goal. This will help prevent unnecessary deaths as well as prevent our hospital systems from being overwhelmed.
