Inspiration
Our team is inspired by the growing need for important information to be shared collectively and easily through everyone from patients who need help to companies distributing resources.
What it does
The COVID-19 Hospital Map locates hospitals and finds their risk of overflowing. Our map works by taking a dataset of hospitals and their amount of beds in the area and the number of cases around the hospitals to calculate the risk of overflow. We then display these results in tooltips that are easily accessible via clicking hospitals on the map or searching for them with the search input.
How we built it
We built this web app by fetching data from the COVID API and the Homeland Infrastructure Foundation-Level Data (HIFLD) using HTML, CSS, Javascript/jQuery (No Framework), and the Mapbox API to display the map.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into many different challenges in problems with code and getting unexpected results, but mainly with formatting data correctly on the map.
Accomplishments that we’re proud of
We are proud of how well we collaborated as a team. We would not have the produce we have today without our fluent collaboration. We are also proud of the knowledge we gained from this experience, we may have learned many new programming skills, but also a lot of knowledge on the coronavirus and pandemics in general.
What we learned
We learned a lot about certain api’s and formatting data correctly to allow them to connect. We learned that we could get a lot more done than we thought we could by really focusing and organizing on what needed to be done. In general, we learned that we can make a difference to help society in this crisis with our intermediate knowledge.
What's next for the COVID-19 Hospital Map
We can add a lot to our project. We plan to add more information that would be useful to everyone including needs for supplies such as masks, ventilators, beds, etc. and live up to date locations of COVID-19 testing facilities and newly made hospital rooms.
