Inspiration

Amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, healthcare workers are required to use PPE when handling suspected and positive COVID-19 patients. However, limited supply and unreasonable prices nowadays caused a scarcity in the supply of PPE in clinic and health centers. As a result, many healthcare workers are at risk after being exposed to the COVID-19 patient. Providing PPEs is very important as it is minimizing the risk of health care personnel to get infected with Covid-19. It is imperative to conduct a risk assessment exposure in healthcare workers after prolonged contact with COVID-19 patients.

What it does

Our proposed apps using the approach algorithm are expected to record healthcare personnel (HCP) daily activities for caring Covid-19 patient care directly or indirectly increase awareness to use personal protective equipment (PPE) and also to provide recommendation for hospital management to protect their HCPs

How we built it

Before we build the apps, first we need to perform an initial assessment on how our healthcare facilities condition get affected with the increasing case of coronavirus infection and how the healthcare workers workload affected with this situation and then we performed literature searching regarding WHO recommendation on assessing the risk assessment for healthcare workers and also existing tools. However, since there is no existing apps that focusing on assessing the exposure of Covis-19 in healthcare workers -> we build the algorithm and performing some improvement and feedback from the clinicians. After finalizing the proof of concept -> we tried to adopt the algorithm in a web form demo using https://kf.kobotoolbox.org/ and performing some initial evaluation to receive internal validation.

Challenges we ran into

The challenges are this apps should be performed by the healthcare personnel themself and ideally, they need to update the information for each patient they are treated so the recommendation for each individual can be varied from HIGH/MEDIUM/LOW RISK based on the patient condition (whether they are confirmed case or wearing a mask or not) and also the healthcare personnel behavior on using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Currently, we have finalized the algorithm to perform the Healthcare Personnel Risk Assessment to Covid-19 Exposure. This algorithm can be adopted by other developer and also healthcare facilities in order to minimize the risk of healthcare personnel getting infected by coronavirus while they are treating the patient

What we learned

As most of our team is academician and researcher in the health informatics and health promotion sectors, involving clinician is really important as we will provide a better practical approach based on the current situation in the hospital. Though we are adopted this algorithm using the WHO CDC recommendation (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/hcp/guidance-risk-assesment-hcp.html) performing local approach also important as every country has specific condition and problem in their readiness to treat a patient with COVID-19 infection.

What's next for Covid-19 Exposure Risk Screening Among Healthcare Personnel

After we finalized our demo and proof of concept using a web form apps and implement it in our university hospital, we would like to scale up this idea in a chatbot technology linked with the messenger platform and integrate it with daily monitoring follow up for any individual user to evaluate their condition every day and provide a better recommendation to the hospital management.
