Inspiration

As the world was finally coming closer to a less plastic-use based society, Covid-19 brought many drawbacks to this initiative. We were inspired by observing how single use plastics were becoming prevalent again in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. Many people who were trying to implement reusable items in to their daily practices, were forced to change and opt for single use plastic items. With that in mind, our team wanted to make a Covid-19 centered carbon footprint calculator to help those who wanted to know their plastic pollution impact and ways they could combat it.

What it does

Our website helps people calculate their carbon footprint of single use plastic items that have been prominently used throughout the pandemic. Through research, we found out the individual carbon footprints of each single use plastic item and implemented it with the calculator. This information is then used to provide options on other ways people can offset their carbon emissions. Our website also provides fast facts on Covid-19's plastic pollution and updates on the environmental impact of the virus to create awareness of the collateral effects of the virus.

How we built it

We used HTML, CSS, Javascript, and Bootstrap to build our website.

Challenges we ran into

Some challenges we faced while building our project was learning how to format using CSS and learning how to use radio forms to calculate carbon footprint. After researching how to implement these features and to incorporate them with javascript we were able to add them to our website.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

After completing this project, our team is proud of the fact that we coded a functional calculator for people to use to inform them about their carbon footprint due to the plastic pollution of Covid-19. We believe this function will help many people still stay on the path to an environmentally friendly future while also combatting the pandemic. We are also proud of the research we did that went into the accurate creation of the formula.

What we learned.

During our research we learned about the environmental impacts of Covid-19, as well as many new Javascript functionalities. We learned how to access our html features and implement their functions with javascript code.

What's next for Covid-19 Carbon Calculator

The next steps for this project are to add more kinds of plastic waste and add dynamic graphs to further showcase the environmental effects of Covid-19. We may possibly shift into an app in the future.
