Inspiration

Basketball is more than points, rebounds, and assists. Every possession, player decision, shooting opportunity, and momentum shift can influence the outcome of a game. However, understanding these patterns often requires navigating multiple statistics platforms and interpreting complex datasets.

We wanted to bring basketball intelligence into one platform where fans, analysts, and sports enthusiasts could explore NBA games through data, machine learning, and interactive visualizations.

This inspired us to build CourtVision AI, an intelligent NBA analytics platform that transforms basketball data into meaningful insights and predictive intelligence.

What it does

CourtVision AI provides a comprehensive environment for exploring NBA games, teams, and players through advanced analytics and machine learning.

Key features include:

  • Live NBA Intelligence: Live scoreboards, game updates, play-by-play events, and game information.
  • Win Probability Prediction: Machine learning models estimate how game outcomes may change throughout a match.
  • Game Impact Analyzer: Identifies momentum shifts, important possessions, scoring runs, and turning points.
  • Player Intelligence: Analyzes player performance, statistics, shooting efficiency, recent form, and performance trends.
  • Player Comparison: Compares players using multiple performance metrics and interactive visualizations.
  • Advanced Shot Analysis: Interactive basketball court visualizations, shooting zones, shot distributions, and expected field-goal analysis.
  • Team Analytics: Offensive rating, defensive rating, net rating, pace, Elo ratings, and team performance trends.
  • Prediction Center: Pre-game matchup predictions with explainable contributing factors.
  • AI Analyst: Generates contextual basketball insights and game briefings from computed analytics.

The platform also distinguishes live, historical, derived, predicted, stale, and synthetic data to maintain transparency and reliability.

How we built it

We built CourtVision AI using a modular full-stack architecture.

Backend and Data Processing

  • Python and Flask for backend services and REST APIs.
  • Socket.IO for real-time scoreboard updates.
  • Pandas and NumPy for data processing and statistical analysis.
  • NBA data sources for live game information, historical statistics, player data, and team performance.

Machine Learning and AI

  • PyTorch for in-game win-probability modeling.
  • XGBoost for shot-quality and expected field-goal analysis.
  • Logistic regression for pre-game win-probability predictions.
  • K-means clustering and cosine similarity for player archetypes and similarity analysis.
  • SHAP-based explainability for understanding model predictions.
  • Gemini/AI provider integration for contextual analytical briefings, with a rule-based fallback.

Frontend and Visualization

  • HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Chart.js for interactive statistical visualizations.
  • Custom basketball court visualizations.
  • Modular JavaScript components and client-side routing.
  • Complete dark and light themes with persistent user preferences.

The platform combines data collection, statistical computation, machine learning inference, and interactive visualizations to deliver a unified basketball analytics experience.

Challenges we ran into

One of our biggest challenges was working with multiple NBA data sources, which can experience network restrictions, rate limits, inconsistent responses, and temporary outages.

Building reliable win-probability and shot-quality models was another challenge, particularly when separating synthetic training data from real-world evaluation data.

We also faced challenges in combining real-time updates with historical statistics, maintaining consistent data across different dashboard sections, and making complex basketball metrics understandable through visualizations.

To address these issues, we implemented caching, fallback source handling, data freshness indicators, model evaluation pipelines, and explainability mechanisms. We also focused on ensuring that unavailable data is identified instead of being presented as authentic information.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Built a comprehensive NBA sports analytics platform integrating multiple data sources and machine learning models.
  • Developed dedicated player, team, game, and shot analytics capabilities.
  • Implemented real-time scoreboard updates using Socket.IO.
  • Integrated predictive modeling and explainability into basketball analytics.
  • Created interactive shot charts and game win-probability visualizations.
  • Designed a complete dual-theme interface with dark and light modes.
  • Built a modular backend and frontend architecture with versioned REST APIs.
  • Added automated offline tests to improve application reliability.

We are particularly proud of bringing different aspects of basketball analytics together into one unified platform.

What we learned

Through this project, we gained practical experience in sports data engineering, machine learning, predictive modeling, and full-stack application development.

We learned how to process structured sports datasets, engineer meaningful features, evaluate predictive models, interpret model outputs, and communicate analytical findings through interactive visualizations.

We also learned that building a reliable analytics product requires more than implementing an ML algorithm. Data quality, model evaluation, transparency, user experience, and system reliability are equally important.

What's next for CourtVision AI

We envision expanding CourtVision AI into a more comprehensive sports intelligence platform.

Our future plans include:

  • Improving model accuracy through larger real-world datasets and extensive validation.
  • Enhancing player performance forecasting and game outcome predictions.
  • Adding deeper possession-level and tactical analysis.
  • Introducing advanced player similarity and lineup optimization.
  • Expanding injury and player availability impact analysis.
  • Improving personalized AI-generated game reports and analytical recommendations.
  • Exploring additional professional sports and analytics datasets.

Our long-term vision is to make advanced sports analytics more accessible, understandable, and useful for everyone who loves the game of basketball.
