Inspiration
Across municipal courthouses, public defender agencies, and litigation war rooms, legal teams are drowning in a tsunami of digital discovery. In modern criminal and civil cases, attorneys receive hundreds of hours of unindexed Police Body-Worn Camera (BWC) video, 911 dispatch calls, and thousands of pages of deposition transcripts. Overworked public defenders often have fewer than 48 hours to review 500+ GB of raw video before a preliminary hearing, leading to critical evidentiary details being missed simply due to human fatigue.
At the same time, courts cannot use public cloud AI. Federal Rules of Evidence (FRE 902(13)/(14)), Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) mandates, and judicial protective orders strictly prohibit uploading confidential discovery, juvenile records, or sealed evidence to third-party public cloud servers (OpenAI, Anthropic, or AWS).
We asked ourselves: What if the storage server already sitting in the courthouse IT rack was also an intelligent, air-gapped evidentiary copilot? That insight inspired CourtVault AI on UGREEN AI NAS.
What it does
CourtVault AI turns UGREEN AI NAS into an autonomous, tamper-evident judicial command center with zero cloud data egress: Cryptographic Chain of Custody: Calculates immutable SHA-256 hashes immediately upon media intake and appends an auditable record to an immutable SQLite ledger: H(M)=SHA-256(M) Autonomous Multi-Angle Timeline Synchronization: Automatically aligns disparate officer bodycams, 911 audio calls, and CAD logs onto a unified, second-by-second master incident timeline with temporal accuracy Δt≤500 ms.
Deposition Contradiction & Impeachment Engine: Cross-examines witness depositions against video evidence to automatically detect perjury or conflicting statements (e.g., flagging that a witness testified the suspect vehicle was a red sedan, whereas BWC footage at 21:04:15 proves a silver coupe). Reversible Judicial Redaction & Exhibit Preparation: Automatically blurs minors' faces, bystanders, and undercover officers, while redacting SSNs and addresses from documents to output certified, Bates-stamped courtroom exhibit binders (DEF-EX-001001).
How we built it
We engineered CourtVault AI as an on-device multi-agent state machine adhering to the Uliya Skill Development Standard and integrating natively with UGOS: Ingest & Audit Agent: Monitors /evidence/intake/ shares, computes SHA-256 integrity hashes, and establishes chain-of-custody logs without CPU bottlenecks.
Multi-Modal ASR Agent: Uses local Whisper-ONNX and speaker diarization to generate word-level timestamped transcripts from bodycam and 911 audio.
Vision & Scene Agent: Detects scene transitions and keyframes, locating objects of interest (weapons, uniforms, vehicles) and facial coordinates for privacy protection.
Evidence Graph Agent: Unifies multimodal timestamps into a local SQLite-VSS vector database using BGE-Small-EN dense embeddings.
Impeachment & Redaction Pipeline: Translates deposition statements into claim propositions, checks them against the chronological graph, applies reversible Gaussian face blurring, and generates Bates-stamped PDF trial binders.
Deterministic UGOS CLI Wrappers: Orchestrated entirely via ugos-cli storage, AI task submission, and RBAC permission enforcement endpoints.
Challenges we ran into
Multi-Camera Temporal Drift: Body cameras from different manufacturers (Axon, Motorola) experience clock drift. We implemented audio waveform cross-correlation to align disparate camera angles with sub-second precision.
Strict 100% Air-Gap Constraints: Unlike SaaS applications that rely on cloud APIs, CourtVault cannot make external calls. Every model weight, tokenizer, and library had to be packaged and optimized for on-device execution within 16GB RAM constraints.
500-Word Proposal Discipline: Summarizing a full-scale, enterprise GovTech architecture into strictly under 500 English words for the official Round 1 proposal required meticulous drafting and word-count verification.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Zero Cloud Data Egress: A fully functional, zero-trust architecture where not a single evidentiary byte ever leaves the physical NAS hardware.
Full Uliya Skill Compliance: Delivered an authoritative SKILL.md specification and hyperlinked reference library (architecture.md, cli_capabilities.md, test_plan.md, disclosures.md) meeting every technical requirement.
Court-Admissible Architecture: Built a cryptographic audit trail designed to satisfy legal chain-of-custody standards for formal courtroom proceedings.
What we learned
Edge AI is the Real Moat for Sensitive Industries: High-compliance sectors (judiciary, healthcare, defense) don't want cloud subscriptions with privacy risks—they require sovereign, on-premise hardware intelligence.
NAS as an AI Compute Hub: Modern NAS platforms with NVMe caching and dedicated NPUs/iGPUs are no longer simple backup drives; they are powerful 24/7 edge servers uniquely suited for continuous background AI workflows.
What's next for CourtVault AI
Round 2 Remote NAS Validation: Stress-testing 50GB multi-stream 4K BWC ingestion on the remote UGREEN AI NAS iDX6011 Pro hardware environment.
Courtroom Offline Presentation UI: Building a lightweight, touch-optimized browser dashboard for litigators to present interactive evidence timelines to judges and juries.
Automated Motion Drafting: Expanding the Impeachment Engine to auto-generate draft evidentiary suppression motions (Brady violation notices and motions in limine) with direct exhibit citations.
