AI Court

Inspiration

Legal systems are built to deliver justice, but for many people they are difficult to understand, expensive to access, and intimidating to navigate. We wanted to explore a simple question: What if anyone could experience how a real courtroom works before stepping into one?

That idea became AI Court—a platform that recreates the courtroom process using artificial intelligence. Rather than simply answering legal questions like a chatbot, AI Court simulates the roles of a judge, prosecution, defense, and legal reasoning, helping users understand how a case could be analyzed. Our goal is not to replace lawyers or courts, but to make legal education and preliminary guidance more accessible.

⸻

What it does

AI Court is an AI-powered virtual courtroom that mimics real judicial proceedings.

Users submit a case with evidence, documents, and supporting information. The platform then:

  • Reviews the facts and evidence.
  • Identifies relevant laws and legal principles.
  • Simulates arguments from both prosecution and defense.
  • Evaluates the strength of each argument.
  • Generates a reasoned judgment with a clear explanation.
  • Allows users to ask follow-up questions about the verdict and legal reasoning.

The focus is transparency—every conclusion is accompanied by the reasoning that led to it.

⸻

How we built it

We built AI Court using modern AI and web technologies.

  • Frontend: React.js for an interactive courtroom interface.
  • Backend: Python with FastAPI.
  • AI: Large Language Models for legal reasoning, argument generation, and judgment drafting.
  • Retrieval System: RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) to ground responses using legal documents and case law.
  • Database: Stores cases, evidence, and user sessions.
  • Prompt Engineering: Separate prompts were designed for each courtroom role—Judge, Prosecutor, Defense Lawyer, and Legal Analyst—to create realistic proceedings.

The system follows a structured workflow instead of producing a single AI response, making the experience closer to an actual courtroom.

⸻

Challenges we ran into

One of our biggest challenges was reducing AI hallucinations while dealing with legal information. Legal reasoning requires precision, so we designed structured prompts and retrieval pipelines to keep responses grounded.

Another challenge was balancing fairness. We wanted both sides of a case to receive equal consideration before a judgment was generated.

Designing an interface that felt like a courtroom instead of a standard chatbot also required several iterations.

⸻

Accomplishments that we’re proud of

  • Built a courtroom simulation instead of a basic legal chatbot.
  • Created separate AI roles that interact like participants in a real court.
  • Developed explainable judgments rather than simple answers.
  • Designed a structured legal workflow that is easy for non-lawyers to understand.
  • Demonstrated how AI can improve legal accessibility while keeping humans in control of final legal decisions.

⸻

What we learned

Building AI Court taught us that legal AI is not just about generating text—it is about reasoning, transparency, and trust.

We learned how prompt engineering, retrieval systems, workflow design, and explainable AI can work together to create more reliable legal applications. We also gained a deeper appreciation for the complexity of judicial decision-making and the importance of presenting balanced arguments.

⸻

What’s next for AI Court

Our vision is to transform AI Court into a comprehensive legal intelligence platform.

Future plans include:

  • Multi-jurisdiction legal support.
  • Integration with official legal databases.
  • Voice-based courtroom interactions.
  • AI-powered evidence analysis for documents, images, and videos.
  • Case outcome prediction using historical judgments.
  • Collaboration tools for lawyers and clients.
  • Multilingual legal assistance.
  • Human lawyer review before any legal advice is relied upon.

Ultimately, we envision AI Court becoming a platform that helps people understand the legal process, prepare for real cases, and improve access to justice through responsible AI.
