Inspiration
Our inspiration was all of us being students and understanding the difficulties of trying to build a schedule and figuring out what courses require certain prerequisites!
What it does
The website scrapes data from the University of Alberta course catalogue and finds the prerequisites for the course your looking into taking!
How we built it
Our team decided to try Django! Django required us to use HTML, CSS, Python, and some of Django's own commands and features. We first decided to try web scraping and found a way to utilize this on the UAlberta course catalogue. This skill allows us to extract specific data from existing web pages. After completing this and learning the basics of Django we created a simplistic UI and started compiling our creation!
Challenges we ran into
We originally wanted to use React but ran into problems with web scraping using JavaScript so we switched to Python and used Django instead. This was a brand new framework for our team and we are proud of the progress we were able to make with little to no experience!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of coming together as a team and tackling a brand new framework in 24 hours!
What we learned
Our team came into this experience with he sole goal of learning something new and becoming better programmers. Through this experience we were able to learn and implement skills that we can take into personal projects and the workplace. Mainly, we learned some fundamentals of Django and how to use python in this framework and also how to properly utilize GitHub!
What's next for Course Helper
As a team we hope to keep this project alive and add new implementations. These implementations could potentially involve third party web scraping/ redirection such as a Rate My Professor and Reddit!
