Inspiration
This project began in the quiet corners of my backyard, where I discovered a cardinal nest hidden inside a dense yew bush. Over the next several days, I documented the mother cardinal caring for her two newborn chicks - feeding them, sheltering them, and encouraging their growth.
Watching their tiny bodies tremble with life, witnessing one baby disappeared on Day 9, and then seeing the second gather enough courage to fly… it all became a deeply emotional experience.
I wanted to preserve that story - not just through photos, but through music, lyrics, and film - capturing the courage it takes for something so small to step into the world.
The full photographic and video documentation of the cardinal family that inspired this project can be viewed here: https://www.facebook.com/amazingcardinals/ This page contains the original nest observations, daily updates, and behind-the-scenes footage.
What it does
Courage to Fly: A Cardinal’s Journey is a short AI-enhanced music film that blends:
- real wildlife photography and video
- an original song written by AI for the baby cardinals
- AI vocal performance and cinematic visuals
It transforms a true backyard nature story into an emotional, uplifting music experience about growth, love, and courage.
How we built it
I first captured the entire 10-day journey using my Nikon DSLR, documenting moments from hatching to fledging. Then I use AI to write a song inspired by what I witnessed - focusing on themes of hope, early loss, and taking the leap.
From there:
- We generated the song using Suno
- Used Dreamina/Capcut to create the singer performance and visual scenes
- Combined real nest footage with AI-generated performance visuals to create a cohesive story
- Added motion graphics in DaVinci Resolve
Challenges we ran into
The biggest emotional challenge was uncertainty - I didn’t know whether both baby birds would survive. On Day 9, one was suddenly gone. While this is normal in nature, it was difficult not knowing exactly what happened.
The technical challenge was blending real wildlife footage into a smooth AI-generated music film while keeping the tone respectful and authentic to the real story.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Transforming a backyard observation into a meaningful, cinematic storytelling piece
- Writing and producing a heartfelt original song inspired by real nature
- Successfully combining real footage with AI-generated visuals in a natural, cohesive way
- Capturing emotional depth without scripting or staging - the story came from real life
- Completing the entire music video from concept to final render in a short production timeline
What we learned
I learned how powerful it can be to integrate authentic nature documentation with modern AI tools. AI didn’t replace the real story - it amplified it. I also learned how fragile yet determined wildlife can be. Even the smallest creature has courage we often overlook.
Creatively, I learned how to better direct AI models, refine character prompts, sync video to music, and maintain emotional tone in multimodal production.
What's next for Courage to Fly: A Cardinal’s Journey
I plan to create an extended version of the project featuring:
- more behind-the-scenes nest footage
- a companion children’s picture book about courage
- prints or digital art made from the real cardinal photos
Ultimately, I want this project to inspire people to look closer at the nature around them - because even the smallest stories can teach us how to be brave.
