Description

myGration contains all 90 immigration and citizenship forms which can be translated, filled, and/or downloaded straight from the site. In case of questions or want to reach out to others, a gps-dependent chat is also present. Where else can people chat and have different languages translated directly for them? Because privacy is important anonymous chat is allowed and no more than name, email, profile picture, and location preference is stored on the site.

Inspiration

We were inspired by the community feeling of GroupMe, and the resourcefulness of an immigrant service provider. After initial research and realizing just how many forms need to be filled out, it was clear data entry would be a clear benefit. From the judges expression of immigrants looking to find others like them, the chat was born.

What it does

myGration gives immigrants a place to find new communities to join and a new tool for sifting through paperwork.

How we built it

This was built with Node.js, C#, and Azure SQL server on the back-end, HTML5 on the front-end, and Heroku is providing the hosting of the website.

Challenges we faced

Learning new software was the most difficult challenge that we faced because it puts you under pressure to quickly learn to avoid being in a time crunch at the end of the competition.

Accomplishments

We were proud to incorporate Google Translate directly into our website allowing the user to seamlessly switch between their native language. We interoped javascript and C#, tackled PDF modification, and sifted through paperwork to end with a site we are proud of.

What we learned

How to better work as a team was a big one. The accomplishments would not be possible without learning the Tech in the process.

What's next

Commercialization of the data entry method is definitely something that could lead to monetary rewards and can better the lives of all immigrants coming into the country.
