Inspiration

I saw lot of best seller products in this topic in the form of Spreadsheet (Google Sheets, MS Excel), I think it’s going to get traction as well if I build as a web app. Moreover a web app offers more benefits like centralized access, fast and easy to navigate, and robust features for advanced development.

But the most important part of the story and my motivation is because I’m now improving my financial literacy and excited to share my journey with others. I myself have been facing the budgeting transparency issue with my spouse, and turns out many of my friends are having similar issue.

What it does

Couple Planner:

  • Shared Expense Tracking: Enable couples to log and categorize expenses, clearly indicating who spent what.
  • Debt Reduction Tools: Provide practical tools and visualizations to help couples create debt repayment plans and monitor progress.
  • Financial Goal Setting: Introduce a shared goals feature where couples can set and track savings goals (e.g., buying a house, taking a vacation).
  • Spending Insights: Show spending patterns with clear, interactive charts and reports, highlighting areas where budgeting improvements could be made.
  • Transparency Tools: Build features that ensure both partners have equal access and visibility into financial data, promoting trust and collaboration.

How I built it

  1. I start by identifying pain points and most common problems with couples in managing their finances.
  2. Ask ChatGPT to help me create prompts and do more research.
  3. Rewrite all the info I got from ChatGPT to be used for initial prompt on Bolt New.
  4. Before I let Bolt New implementing, I usually ask with Discuss mode first.
  5. After multiple testings and promptings, I saw the MVP is ready, I’m confident to share with others about this app.

Challenges I ran into

No luck at my first attempt. I realized that I gave too much details on my initial prompt and failed to tackle the technical and formula on the next interactions with Bolt New. So I started from scratch and got much better result.

Accomplishments that I’m proud of

Hard to believe I can build solid app with Bolt New. UI/UX design and database flows are superb. I can see it very helpful for myself and I truly believe others will gain benefits as well.

What I learned

Initial research with the help of AI and search engine are truly important, it’s foundation of the project success. Failed to perfom deep research resulting unclear results from Bolt New (definitely causing confuse for myself).

What's next for Couple Planner

Small improvement to implement advanced features like export data and generate report. Improve the partner invitation smoother.
