The 5-Minute Vent – Project Story

💨 What It Is

The 5-Minute Vent is a judgement-free digital pressure valve.

Open it. Choose your time: 3 minutes for a quick release, 5 minutes for a solid unpack, or 10 minutes for when you really need to spiral. Then type anything — rage, sadness, nonsense, things you'd never say out loud.

The bot doesn't fix, therapize, or quote inspirational Instagram posts. It just listens.

"Go on." "I'm listening." "Keep going."

When the timer ends, you choose: burn the conversation forever, or let it fade quietly after 24 hours. No history. No "your data helps us improve." Just catharsis — at your own pace.

💡 What Inspired Me

I noticed something about modern mental health apps.

They all want to fix you. Track your mood. Teach you CBT. Send notifications asking "How are you feeling today?"

But sometimes, you don't want to be fixed. You don't want a solution. You don't want a breathing exercise.

You just want to scream into the void — and have the void nod back.

I also noticed that not every vent is the same length. A work email that pissed you off takes 3 minutes. A fight with your partner might take 10. Giving people choice without overwhelming them felt important.

So I built a place for all of it.

🛠️ How I Built It

I built the entire app using MeDo — a platform that lets you build full-stack apps just by describing them in natural language.

The exact prompt I started with:

"Chat window with a choice of 3, 5, or 10 minutes. User selects time, then types anything — screaming, cursing, nonsense. Bot responds with simple listening prompts: 'Go on.' 'I'm listening.' 'Keep going.' When timer ends: 'You did that. Want to burn this conversation?' Yes = permanent delete. No = encrypted for 24 hours then auto-delete."

From there, MeDo handled:

  • Three timer options with visual progress bars
  • The chat interface with real-time typing
  • The bot's simple, non-judgmental response logic
  • The two deletion paths (instant burn vs. 24-hour encrypted decay)
  • One-click deployment to a public URL

No backend configuration. No database schemas. No "we value your privacy" legal copy to write — the architecture is the privacy policy.

📚 What I Learned

1. Choice without paralysis.
Three options is the sweet spot. 3 minutes says "this is small." 5 minutes says "this is normal." 10 minutes says "this is heavy and that's okay." No slider from 1-60. No "custom" option that creates decision fatigue.

2. Constraints create safety.
The timer tells your brain: you don't have to be productive with this time. Just be present. I learned that good design isn't just about what you add — it's about what you deliberately leave out.

3. The most therapeutic AI doesn't act like a therapist.
Real listening doesn't involve advice, diagnosis, or the word "healing journey." The bot's only job is to signal: I see you. Keep going. That's harder to design than it sounds, because it requires restraint.

4. Ephemerality is a feature, not a limitation.
We're trained to think software should save everything. But for some emotions, the ability to destroy is more valuable than the ability to archive. There's liberation in impermanence.

More time doesn't always mean more release. Having control over the time does.

⚠️ Challenges Faced

Challenge How I Solved It
Making the bot feel present without being annoying Limited responses to 3-4 variations: "Go on," "I'm listening," "Keep going," "Tell me more." No emojis. No exclamation marks. Flat affect on purpose.
Different timer lengths needed different pacing 3-minute vent gets responses slightly more often (every ~15 sec). 10-minute vent gives more space (every ~45 sec). The bot adapts without being told.
"Permanent delete" needed to actually feel permanent Added a visual "burn" animation (fire consuming the text) and a confirmation step. Users needed to see the deletion happen to trust it.
24-hour encryption sounded technical Rephrased in the UI: "Fade quietly — your words disappear tomorrow. You won't see them again."
Users didn't know which time to pick Added a small tooltip: "3 min = quick vent. 5 min = the sweet spot. 10 min = you've got a lot in there."

🔥 What's Next?

  • Audio venting — Hold-to-record for people who process better out loud
  • "The Echo" — Optional feature where the bot reads back one sentence you wrote, but only if you check a box first
  • Post-vent ritual — After burning, a single question: "On a scale of 1-10, how much lighter do you feel?" (No tracking. Just for the moment.)
  • Timer extension — At 30 seconds left, "Need another 3 minutes?" No judgment. Just an option.

🙏 Final Thought

"Some thoughts don't need to be processed. They just need to leave."

Building The 5-Minute Vent reminded me that software doesn't have to be smart to be helpful. It doesn't need AI that pretends to understand you.

Sometimes, the most helpful thing a machine can do is shut up and listen — then promise to forget everything you said.

And let you choose exactly how long you need to fall apart.

That's not therapy. That's mercy.
