Inspiration
I don't know if you are gonna read this text before or after the video, but in the video I tell the truth, the main reason I created Countable was to count my farts, yeap. I started going to the gym about two years ago and because of that I went from bad eating habits to eating a lot of protein daily (chicken breast mostly) and because of that my farts frequency sky rocketed and my wife started to complain... Long story short, I create Countable and started counting everything that I could: farts, books, sex life, water, coffee, thoughts, addictions, expenses... That is why I call it a "tally counter for your life", because, to me, it really is.
What it does
It counts! It is a tally counter for your life, one that you can count anything from farts to calories!
How we built it
For the mobile front end I used Flutter, so I could build Android and iOS simultaneously. For the web front end I used React + Vite + Tawilwind. For the back end Cloudflare Workers (typescript, and wrangler to deploy).
Challenges we ran into
One of the most difficult part was to decide what feature not to include in the project. It happens that when you have a form based application you can do a lot given its generic nature.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Just the fact that I was able to finally publish my app in the AppStore and PlayStore is already one of the highlights of this Shipaton for me. But, to list a few other things, I think that creating so many configuration options for the user to make the app feels like home. Also, I love how the animations turned out to be, the little boat animation for the addiction help screen is peak design (for me at least haha). I wanted to publish the app in the GalaxyStore, I even bought a Fold 8 and made a lot of the screens adjustable, they got beautifull designes when the phone is unfolded, but, to my surprise, to publish in the GalaxyStore I would need a DUNS number, but, to have one, I would need to open a Company and thats something that was way out of the table (at least for me), so that is a category that I will not be able to participate, nonetheless I am proud of the foldable design!
What we learned
I learned a lot how the app stores works. I improved my knowledge about the use of AI in creating code and learned about it creating videos. I had never published an app that required a subscription, so a learned a lot about that also. I should have invested more in marketing and learning about it, to be honest, a learned a little, but it was, as I said, a just a little and far from being enough.
What's next for Countable
Well, there is still a lot that can be done. I think I am gonna create an app (an spin off) that is less generic, one focused on health and nutrition. Countable gave so much knowledge about nutrition and I wanted to add so much more about it in the app but it felt like it was not the right place, despite it all, Countable is a tally counter and not nutrition and health app. And I feel the same about the help addiction functionality, I think it could spin off into a different app. But for Countable itself, as I said, there are lots of things that can be done, I am everyday finding improvements here and there, new ideias pop all the time and using AI there is no limit to what can be done!
