Inspiration

Recently we have been trying to form our college lists and have found it tough to gather accurate information from tons of websites to see which colleges we would even have a shot of getting into based on acceptance rates and trying to find where we fall into the ginormous pool of students worldwide. It would be much easier to form a college list if we could pay a college counselor to do it for us but most people can't afford it so making an AI to make a baseline college list just off your SAT score and GPA would make it much easier to build a complete list.

What it does

Counselor AI lists colleges for students to apply to, categorizing them into Reach, Target, and Safety schools based on their GPA and SAT scores. Reach is a school the student has a low chance of getting into, Target is a school the student has a decent chance of getting into and Safety is a school the student has a high chance of getting into.

How we built it

We coded the bot using Python.

Challenges we ran into

We both only have a year of experience using Python in school so it wasn't easy coding the project and it took very long to debug and try to find what was wrong and to learn how to code parts of it.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of being able to make the AI work after running into so many problems coding it.

What we learned

We learned how to code using common data sets and learned how disadvantaged first-gen students are based on the common data sets indicating bias toward legacy students.

What's next for Counselor AI

To add more data sets to make a more accurate and personalized list. We also hope to add more elements to the students' application like extracurriculars, quality of recommendations, and socioeconomic background.
