Family game nights in the living room often feel disconnected when players are forced to stare down at individual mobile screens instead of looking up at the television. We designed CouchTrivia Live specifically for the Amazon Fire TV ecosystem to return the family focus to the big screen through a genuine 10-foot, multi-modal interface combining directional D-pad controls with real-time Alexa voice inputs.

What It Does

  • 10-Foot Television Spatial UI: Designed with high-contrast active cards that highlight with an electric cyan border and a 1.05x scale transform when focused with the remote.
  • 5% Overscan TV Safe Zone: Compliant with Amazon Fire OS and Vega OS display guidelines, keeping all interactive content inside the 5% margin (press 'O' to view calibration lines).
  • Multi-Modal Flow (Remote + Voice): Players can navigate and answer using standard TV remote D-pad controls or speak answers aloud naturally ("Alexa, Titan", "Option 2").
  • Interactive Game Host: Narrates trivia questions aloud using speech synthesis and celebrates family high scores.
  • Zero-Dependency Audio: Synthesizes navigation ticks, buzzer tones, and victory chimes on the fly using the Web Audio API—no external audio files to buffer or fail over TV connections.

How We Built It

  • Built using high-performance, lightweight web technologies optimized for Fire OS WebViews, Amazon Web App Starter Kit (WASK), and Vega OS package runtimes.
  • Implemented a Euclidean distance 2D spatial navigation listener capturing remote directional events (ArrowUp, ArrowDown, ArrowLeft, ArrowRight, Enter, Back).
  • Integrated speech recognition parsing real-time vocal triggers for immediate player buzzing.

Challenges We Overcame

Balancing television overscan margins while ensuring seamless, collision-free coordination between rapid D-pad taps and voice recognition inputs.

What's Next

  • Direct integration with the Alexa Skills Kit (ASK) for native smart speaker pairing.
  • Cloud-synced community question packs powered by AWS Lambda. ## What it does
