Inspiration
Our journey began in the cotton fields of Northern Benin (Banikoara). Cotton is known as our "White Gold," yet the farmers who produce it are the most financially "invisible." We observed a heartbreaking reality: farmers often wait weeks for cash payments that pass through multiple opaque intermediaries. This leads to administrative "leakage," where nearly 20% of the value can be lost to fraud or unofficial fees. We realized that the problem wasn't a lack of production, but a lack of a trusted, digital link between a farmer's identity and their hard-earned money.
What it does
CottonPay ID is a Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) solution that transforms a farmer's National ID into a secure, instant payment gateway.
- Instant Authentication: Using the MOSIP framework, farmers will be able to authenticate their identity at the collection point via fingerprint or a QR code.
- Direct Disbursement: Once identity and cotton weight are verified, the system will trigger an automated payment directly to the farmer's Mobile Money account, bypassing all middlemen.
- Financial Footprint: Every transaction will generate a Verifiable Credential, creating a digital "salary slip" that farmers can use to prove their income to banks for micro-loans.
How we will build it
We will build a prototype that bridges the gap between civil identity and fintech. Our development approach will include:
- Identity Layer: Integration with the MOSIP Sandbox to simulate secure authentication against a national registry.
- Logic Layer: Development of a backend that will calculate payments taking into account cotton weight, market price, and any pre-existing debts for seeds or fertilizer.
- Access Layer: Design of a USSD interface (for basic feature phones) and a Web Dashboard for cotton cooperatives to monitor real-time transaction transparency.
Challenges we will face
The biggest hurdle is the "Connectivity Gap." Cotton fields are often in remote areas with zero 4G coverage. We need to design a "Sign-now, Sync-later" protocol. Transactions will be cryptographically signed on a local agent's device and automatically pushed to the blockchain or database once the agent reaches a networked area. We also need to ensure Privacy-by-Design, using MOSIP's identity aliasing so that buyers can verify a farmer is "valid" without seeing their entire private civil profile.
Accomplishments we're proud of
- Trust Building Vision: We are designing a system where even an illiterate farmer will be able to receive a payment confirmation via SMS in seconds, creating instant trust in the technology.
- DPI Alignment: We are building a solution that doesn't rely on a private "walled garden" but utilizes Digital Public Goods (DPGs) like MOSIP, making it sovereign and sustainable for the state.
- Gender Inclusion: We are creating a pathway for female farmers to receive payments directly into their own wallets, ensuring financial autonomy.
What we are learning
We are learning that Identity is the "Oxygen" of Financial Inclusion. Without a verifiable digital ID, the rural world remains trapped in an informal, risky economy. We are also gaining deep technical insights into the MOSIP platform and the importance of interoperability—the idea that a solution built in Benin should be able to "speak" the same language as systems in Togo or Rwanda.
What's next for CottonPay ID
- Regional Scaling: We aim to adapt CottonPay ID for the UEMOA region (Burkina Faso, Mali, etc.) to support cross-border agricultural trade.
- Micro-Credit Integration: Partnering with local banks to use CottonPay's transaction history as a Digital Credit Score.
- AI Integration: Using historical production data to provide farmers with predictive insights on their crop yields directly via their Digital ID profile.
