Inspiration
Many students at Wesleyan often discard items throughout the year. While a student-led group currently collects, stores, and redistributes these items to others.
What it does
We've developed a platform to streamline that process. Our platform connects students on the same campus directly, enabling them to pass on items they no longer need to others who can use them—helping reduce waste and promote sustainability.
How we built it
We utilized Lucidchart for database schema design and employed HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for frontend development. Two team members focused on Lucidchart and frontend implementation, while the other two worked on backend development using PHP, MySQL, and XAMPP.
Challenges we ran into
One of the key challenges was selecting an implementation approach that balanced simplicity with functionality, ensuring it effectively met our goals without unnecessary complexity. Additionally, integrating email verification into the platform posed its own set of technical and logistical hurdles.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Turning our idea into a functional platform in less than 24 hours is an achievement we’re incredibly proud of.
What we learned
We learned to break down the platform into smaller components, assign each part to team members, and collaboratively bring all the pieces together.
What's next for CoThrift
We plan to collaborate with sustainability groups at Wesleyan to gather valuable feedback and refine our platform. Our goal is to achieve campus-wide adoption and eventually expand to other universities, fostering a broader culture of sustainability.
