🎃 Inspiration
What should you be this Halloween? A clown? A policeman? Harry Potter?
A common problem during Halloween costume is finding the perfect costume; it has to be recognizable, unique, and you have to look good in it. The time it takes to research for inspiration and type it in Amazon to find if there's a cheap one available is just too long. We know this struggle and with our website, we have the solution—an easy-to-use platform that will make the process of choosing a Halloween costume easier and faster. We'll reduce this process to just 2 clicks!
👻 What it does
What Costume Co does it that sorts through the extensive costumes in our catalogue and generates the user a unique costume that fits the user's wants and needs. This website makes finding costumes easier and faster, leaving users with more time to focus on other holiday preparations to make Halloween better.
🦇 How we built it
We built it with Velo by Wix, got the domain from Domian.com and hosted it on Vercel. The backend was built by sorting the 160+ costume ideas to match what categories or interests the user selected.
🧡 Challenges we ran into
This wasn't our original idea. Until 6pm ET yesterday afternoon, we were making a dog walking route randomizer. We couldn't figure out how to draw the route out, though. We tried doing it with the Google Maps API and Linode Cloud API, but we couldn't get it to work, so we switched our idea (meaning we only had 16 hours to code and rebrand the entire website). Additionally, Velo only allows one person to code at a time, which means that they had to communicate when we finish a part of the website so any other person could hop on.
🍭 Accomplishments that we're proud of
Since we are all iOS developers, we decided to do something completely new this time and do something we've never done before: build a website. Although this is our first time, we are proud of our finished product, which is a beautiful website with a great UI and user functionality. This website is one that works all the way through and we can all see being used by us and our friends this Halloween.
🌕 What we learned
We learned almost everything there is in the project. We had to learn JS (none of our members were proficient with it coming into the project), and how to use Velo.
🕸️ What's next for Costume Co
In the future, we plan to add more costumes to the website as well as adding add dark and light modes to make our website more accessible. Moreover, we could make a machine-learning software that suggests the most clicked-on costumes first.
