Inspiration

As the son from a travel enthusiast family, airfare is always a big problem. The most cost-effective flights to different places are different. So I came up with the idea of researching the most cost-effective flights of different airlines.

What it does

It sorts different flights into three categories according to their distance: short distance flights (<500 miles), medium distance flights (500-1500 miles), and long distance flights (1500 + miles). In each group, it lists the most cost-effective carriers, so that our users can choose the most cost-effective airline routes according to their different itineraries.

How we built it

This project was completed entirely with Excel. First, retain the route data for the past five years through a filter. Then, divide the routes into 3 categories short-distance (< 500 miles), medium distance (500-1500 miles), and long distance (1500+ miles) travel according to the flight distance. Then, divide the distance by the fare to calculate a new variable, MPD, which stand for miles per dollar. After that, use Excel to generate a box plot of MPD. Mark the 25 percentile with the highest MPD value as cheap, the 25 percentile with the lowest MPD value as expensive, and the rest as neutral. Finally, divide the routes into three groups according to distance and filter out the routes marked cheap in each group, and generate a pie chart to visualize which airline has a better value for money for which distance of travel.

Challenges we ran into

Sometimes the excel doesn't function well and I have lost my progress more than one time and that makes me really fustrated, and it doesn't generate some of the chart for me, so I have to use other software such as google sheet to generate the charts.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am pround of finishing this project as a freshman and this is my first time attending a formal hackathon! My first user is my parents, the travel enthusiasts and they really enjoy knowing the most cost-effective carrier in different types of route.

What we learned

The use of excel such as graph generation, filter, data visualization and how to prepare data for analysis.

What's next for Cost-Effective Personalized Airline

I will develop this into an app which my users can tell the app places they would like to travel to and this app will give the most cost-effective airline recommendation.
