Inspiration

The inspiration from this project stemmed from our own problems that we experience throughout our lives as college students. As we are approaching finals, as well as the end of the school year and summer, us college students deal with the issue of maintaining motivation and work hard and study until the end. Studying can be tiring, hard, and boring. The best way to combat such a problem would be to somehow make studying fun. That is where we came up with CosmoPomo Meowdoro, a space-themed Pomodoro study timer that makes studying much more appealing and enjoyable to the everyday college student!

What it does

CosmoPomo Meowdoro is a timer that utilizes the Pomodoro studying technique to ensure maximized concentration and minimized mental fatigue. We allow users to choose between the 25-minute study period with 5 minute break period or the 45-minute study period with 15 minute break period. Once selecting the preferred option, users will be timed during their study period and taken to a timed break page that provides students with funny jokes and cat videos to help them relax.

How we built it

We spent Friday night brainstorming ideas, then on Saturday we started building and debugging. Although we were strong-minded to tackle our problems, we knew when to be flexible and ask for help from the mentors. We always made sure our team members were on the same page when making design decisions.

Challenges we ran into

  • Merging commits and pushes properly
  • Figuring out how the syntax and scope to make API requests in React
  • Learning and picking up new things as we go

Accomplishments that we're proud of

All of us walked into this hackathon without a team; however, we were all very open-minded to just learning as much as we could during this hackathon as well as creating deeper connections with those around us. We are very proud of our open mindsets throughout the entire event as well as seeing our idea come to life right before our very own eyes throughout the weekend. We can confidently say that we learned more than we were expecting, and this experience has been one to remember!

What we learned

We learned how to...

  • use git version control
  • redirect pages
  • style websites using CSS
  • use React with both TypeScript and JavaScript
  • make API calls to Youtube
  • import fonts front Google fonts
  • manage assets and keep our project organized in folders
  • teamwork!

What's next for CosmoPomo Meowdoro

As we were brainstorming and creating our project, we were hoping to make the project more dynamic by allowing it to give our users compliments and positive affirmations to strengthen students' motivation to study. Users should be able to log in with their UCI accounts and choose a class to focus on studying for. We want to make it more user interactive. We were also considering adding different widgets and activities during the break period such as stretching exercises, breathing exercises, and possibly a brain dump or journaling section that could maximize the user experience during their much-needed breaks. We hope to add these features next for CosmoPomo Meowdoro.
