Inspiration

As a team united by our love for music, the 'Outer Space' theme this year ignited our creativity. Inspired by the unique frequencies of celestial bodies in our universe and the sounds of space-themed music, we envisioned a space beat-maker app. Our idea revolves around using celestial bodies as a playful analogy, each offering distinct sounds that users can configure in orbits around a unique 'sonar' system.

What it does

Cosmix transforms the positions of planets, moons, and stars into distinctive audio compositions. Users can experiment with the celestial orchestra, where planets produce melodic sounds, moons contribute drums/beats, and stars create ambient sounds. By dragging and dropping these celestial elements onto orbits, users can compose, experiment with pitch by adjusting orbits, add or remove duplicates, and save/share their space-inspired musical configurations.

How we built it

We designed this prototype using Figma and produced the music with GarageBand.

Challenges we ran into

Two of our three group members had no experience with hackathons or design, and it was a big learning curve to learn how to use Figma. Furthermore, the program's smart animate feature had its limitations and we couldn't get all of the animations to work perfectly, nor could we integrate sound into the prototype itself.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

This was the first hackathon experience for two of our team members, and we take pride in achieving a polished and visually stunning result. We also meticulously crafted the designs for all the planets, moons, and stars drawing inspiration from their real counterparts.

What we learned

This experience honed our project management skills, utilizing FigJam for brainstorming, planning, and fleshing out features, while also delving into the intricacies of Figma. Additionally, we learned some cool new tricks using smart animate!

What's next for Cosmix

In the future, we want to flesh out all of the features and interactions more, and then possibly develop it into a fully-fledged app with code, with plans to expand its array of sounds.
