Inspiration

Life as an astronaut in space is both mentally and physically demanding. Being far from home, astronauts often face the added challenge of missing family and friends, which can amplify the strain of their already challenging environment. Our goal in making this project was to provide astronauts with relief from these difficulties by creating opportunities to connect with their loved ones, helping them feel closer to home.

What it does

This adorable creature will incentivize an astronaut to regularly engage in physical activity, strengthen the bonds they share with those at home, and push them to stay on track during their mission.

How we built it

The big inspirations for our project were the many virtual pet apps, games, and websites we have come across in the past, such as Finch and Tamagotchi. We were able to use Figma to produce nearly all of the frontend portion of our project, with the help of an artist on our team who drew our visuals. React.js paved the way for us to write our backend.

Challenges we ran into

Along the way, we were learning React.js and Figma for the first time, posing a big challenge to us as we had to navigate through foreign concepts and countless bugs. This, in turn, made time management a glaring difficulty for us -- we spent a lot of time learning, but not implementing.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Despite struggling immensely for the first few hours, we were still able to come out with a functioning product to submit, which we are proud of! Additionally, for most of us, it was our first time experiencing a hackathon and creating a technical project.

What we learned

We were able to learn how to utilize React.js and Figma as ways to efficiently build a website.

What's next for CosmicCorgi

In the future, we hope to further refine our project by implementing more features that will promote an astronaut's relationship with those on earth, such as adding a way for them to relay messages or complete activities in a virtual environment together.
