π Inspiration
For our Hack the North project, one of our main goal was to experiment with Unity and game development. More importantly, however, we were simply excited to be able to work with each other! As a group of four, we are in the same program, but in completely different sets. Bonded by a love of cats (sorry, cats), a drive to learn, and a summer-time meet up with board games, we decided to build Cats In Space.
π What it does
Cats In Space is a single-player 2D tower defense game set in space. It's intention was to create a safe space for our team to experiment with Unity and C# for the very first time as growing developers! π±
No cats were harmed in the process of this production and we do not mean to offend any cats.
π How we built it
Using Unity and C# and a lot of Googling.
π Challenges we ran into
As with any learning process, there were a lot of unknowns for our team when we dove into Unity. The first hiccup we ran into right off the bat was figuring out how to use Git with Unity! We ended up settling with trying out Unity's Collaboration feature, which helped us easily Publish and see each other's changes.
In addition to this particular detail, we also ran into challenges debugging our code, solving the mysteries of the disappearing Sprites, and constructing a map. Although a lot of this took time, we made sure to push through and simply had the goal to wrap up a minimal, finished game.
π«Accomplishments that we're proud of
There were certainly times when it seemed like there was a long road ahead of us to completion for this game, but we are really proud of the fact that we were able to wrap our game up with fun components and a great experience going through trials and errors together as a team.
π° What we learned
We learned that sometimes, hackathons can be a chance to not only challenge yourself to take home prizes, but just to learn. It can be a great chance for you and your friends to dial back and enjoy the learning process together.
β¨ What's next for Cats In Space
Our project can be grown to be a more developed game; however, most of the developers really wanted this to be our first foray into development on Unity overall. It is not our intention to continue building upon this game. That being said, we can see some future changes that we can implement better including:
- a better balanced Catmmando to Enemy gameplay
- increase the Catmmando variety π±βπ
- a more customized build with an improved UI
- adjust the shooting range of our Catmmandos
- include areas where players cannot station Catmmandos
