Cosmic Compass: Your Academic Command Center
Inspiration
The college application process can be overwhelming, with students juggling deadlines, essays, and scholarships while staying on top of assignments. I wanted to create a tool that simplifies and centralizes all these tasks in a way that's engaging and fun. Drawing inspiration from space exploration, I envisioned a platform where students could navigate their academic journey like astronauts on a mission, tracking their progress and accomplishments.
What it does
Cosmic Compass is a web application that acts as a "mission control" for students navigating the college application process. It helps students stay organized with deadlines, track their applications, discover scholarships, and manage assignments. Key features include:
- Trajectory Planner: A to-do list with a cosmic twist, featuring deadlines, priorities, and completion tracking for tasks like college applications and scholarship submissions.
- Mission Control Dashboard: A personalized dashboard that displays tasks, deadlines, and upcoming events, ensuring nothing is missed.
- Cosmic Calendar: A calendar that syncs academic deadlines with celestial events, providing reminders and highlighting important dates.
- Scholarship Finder (Cosmic Search): Uses AI to match students with scholarships and colleges based on their profiles and preferences.
- Gamification: Earn "Space Credits" for completing tasks and making progress, which can be spent on customizing avatars.
How we built it
Cosmic Compass was built using a modern tech stack:
- Frontend: Next.js for server-side rendering and routing, ensuring a seamless user experience.
- Component Library: Shadcn UI and NextUI for clean, customizable UI components.
- Backend & Database: Firebase for authentication and real-time database storage, ensuring smooth data synchronization.
- AI Integration: Google Gemini Flash 1.5 (free tier) powers the chatbot and AI-assisted features.
- Hosting & Deployment: Deployed via Vercel, integrated with Next.js for effortless deployment and scaling.
Challenges we ran into
- AI Integration: Implementing an AI chatbot that was both accurate and responsive took some time, especially with free-tier API limitations.
- Gamification: Designing a system that accurately rewards students for task completion without overwhelming them was challenging. Balancing fun and productivity was key.
- UI/UX: Creating an intuitive and engaging space-themed interface that was both visually appealing and functional required careful planning and iteration.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Comprehensive Planner: The integrated to-do list and calendar that syncs with deadlines and tasks has been a major success, ensuring students can stay on top of everything.
- AI-Powered Assistance: The chatbot provides personalized advice, answers to questions, and even essay brainstorming support.
- Gamification & Customization: The Space Credits system, where students can earn rewards and customize avatars, has added an element of fun to the process.
What we learned
- Tech Stack Choices: Firebase proved to be an excellent choice for quick database integration, while Next.js provided the flexibility we needed for server-side rendering.
- User Feedback: Understanding the challenges students face with managing applications and deadlines was essential in creating features that truly solve problems.
- Design Iteration: Balancing an engaging interface with productivity-focused features required thoughtful design choices to maintain user interest without sacrificing functionality.
What's next for Cosmic Compass
- Expanded AI Features: Integrating more AI capabilities for essay review and personalized feedback.
- Mobile App: A mobile version to keep students on track no matter where they are.
- Enhanced Scholarship Matching: Implementing more advanced AI algorithms for better scholarship and college recommendations.
- More Gamification: Adding additional rewards and achievements to keep students motivated throughout the process.
