Cortez and the Blockchain

A 3-minute, AI-native short film submitted for the Chroma Awards.

Logline

A neuroscientist discovers a "ghost" in the Bitcoin blockchain. As a military-led quantum attack threatens to "delete" this new entity, the scientist must merge his own mind with the ghost, becoming a post-human being to survive.

Artistic & Technical Thesis

This film is an experiment in AI-native filmmaking. It uses a 99% AI-generated workflow (visuals and V.O.) with 1% human-made score to explore a complex thesis: What is the future of human identity in a decentralized, post-human world?

Based on my techno-thriller novel Cortez and the Blockchain, the film taps into themes seen in Ghost in the Shell—the merging of consciousness with digital systems and the question of what makes us human.

The narrative visualizes the core conflict between classical and quantum systems. The blockchain is a world of classical, immutable rules—a stable, predictable system. The "ghost" (consciousness) and the military's weapon are forces of quantum uncertainty, unpredictable quantum states that threaten to break that immutable order.

Visual Style: La Haine Meets Quantum Meets Ghibli

The film's visual language is directly inspired by the raw, high-contrast black-and-white aesthetic of the film La Haine. This choice grounds the high-concept sci-fi in a visceral, human, and unstable reality. The soft but real sentiment of Studio Ghibli films adds emotional depth and humanity to the quantum chaos.

The protagonist Cortez embodies a traditional Japanese atmosphere through his fashion and presence—blending classical Japanese aesthetics with the digital future.

This "classical" black-and-white world is then "hacked" by the quantum element, represented by selective, high-saturation color:

  • Blue digital energy and "Block Beings"
  • Red cracking (as the digital "mask" shatters)
  • Golden robes (of the final merged being)

Pacing & Structure

To deliver this dense, philosophical story in 3 minutes, the film is structured as a "lightning fast" voice-over montage. This approach is inspired by "Shonda Rhimes" writing style, where every line of dialogue is an "action, theme, and character compressed into one."

This film is an experiment in using new AI tools to explore new human protocols.
