Inspiration
I have reading technical blog posts for a while but haven't found it easy to review what I read in an easy manner. I started using Anki, but generating the right flashcards has been sort of difficult. To solve this, I built this Anki companion and reaching habit tracker.
What it does
Cortex Log allows you to view, track and generate flashcards from blogs/internet sources that you read from. It summarizes, chunks and generates detail oriented flashcards from these sources for review. You are still in the driver seat as to which cards you want to add to your Anki deck. Cortex Log even allows you to edit cards, or create entirely new ones before syncing them to Anki.
How we built it
It is built as a self hosted web application with a Next.js frontend and a FastAPI backend (which makes calls to Gemini API). Terraform handles provisioning of all cloud resources on the Google Cloud Platform.
Challenges we ran into
The main challenge is that some websites do not allow scraping which made it necessary to add the raw text input field as a fallback.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Learning about flipped interaction was fruitful. Most of the time spent was on these interactions and allowed me to really think about each and every decision before building instead of accepting the AI's first answer.
What we learned
- Gained an understanding of how flipped interaction works for software development.
- Strengthened knowledge in PubSub architected and SSEs
What's next for Cortex Log
- PDF uploads and parsing
- Customizable prompts for flashcard generation
