Inspiration

In 2020, Canada received more than 200,000 refugees and immigrants. The more immigrants and BIPOC individuals I spoke to, the more I realized, they were only aiming for employment opportunities as cab drivers, cleaners, dock workers, etc. This can be attributed to a discriminatory algorithm that scraps their resumes, and a lack of a formal network to engage and collaborate in. Corporate Mentors connects immigrants and BIPOC individuals with industry professionals who overcame similar barriers as mentors and mentees. This promotion of inclusive and sustainable economic growth has the potential of creating decent jobs and significantly improving living standards can also aid in their seamless transition into Canadian society. Thereby, ensuring that no one gets left behind.

What it does

To tackle the global rise of unemployment and increasing barriers to mobility for marginalized BIPOC communities and immigrants due to racist and discriminatory machine learning algorithms and lack of networking opportunities by creating an innovative web platform that enables people to receive professional mentorship and access to job opportunities that are available through networking.

How we built it

The software architecture model being used is the three-tiered architecture, where we are specifically using the MERN Stack. MERN stands for MongoDB, Express, React, Node, after the four key technologies that make up the stack: React(.js) make up the top ( client-side /frontend), Express and Node make up the middle (application/server) tier, and MongoDB makes up the bottom(Database) tier. System Decomposition explains the relationship better below. The software architecture diagram below details the interaction of varying components in the system.

Challenges we ran into

The mere fact that we didn't have a UX/UI designer on the team made us realize how difficult it was to create an easy-to-navigate user interface.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of the matching algorithm we created to match mentors with mentees based on their educational qualifications, corporate experience, and desired industry. Additionally, we would also be able to monetize the website utilizing the Freemium subscription model we developed if we stream webinar videos using Accedo.

What's next for Corporate Mentors

1) The creation of a real mentor pool with experienced corporate professionals is the definite next step.

2) Furthermore, the development of the freemium model (4 hrs of mentoring every month) @ $60 per 6 months or $100 per 12 months.

3) Paid Webinars (price determined by the mentor with 80% going to them) and 20% taken as platform maintenance fee.

4) Create a chat functionality between mentor and mentee using Socket.io and add authorization in the website to limit access to the chats from external parties

5) Create an area for the mentor and mentee to store and share files
