Inspiration
We were inspired by the day to day struggles that many face going about their lives in these unrelenting times. We thought that the best way to represent the struggling and suffocating feeling is to model the restrictions that COVID put on people's lives inside of a video game.
What it does
The game spawns many coronavirus molecules and sends them in the player’s direction, which the player must dodge as they come in. The molecules leave a trail behind that is also deadly to the player. Given these restrictions, the player can, however, clear the trail using the disinfectant they are holding, which they must refill occasionally by picking up bottles of disinfectant that spawn around the map. The player must survive for as long as possible!
How we built it
We used c++ and SFML to make the game. The front end web development was built with HTML and CSS. The background illustration was drawn with ProCreate, and the pixel art was made using Piskel.
Challenges we ran into
The most challenging part was figuring out the algorithms for the collision between the player and the molecule streaks. It was also a challenge to develop the web platform for our game. The idea we had was to use a web page as a space to “launch” our game. Danni took over the front-end web development, but as she is just starting to learn about coding with HTML/CSS, she has faced many challenges with the process, including basic coding functions.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Working on two different projects (a game and a webpage) simultaneously and delegating jobs between all of the members of the group in a way that was both productive and instructive for everyone involved.
What we learned
We learned a lot of important skills in html and css, and also in c++, where we learned a lot about using libraries (SFML and boost). We also strengthened our team-working skills.
What’s next for Rona Rumble!
As Rona Rumble was made with the intention to raise awareness of COVID-19 and how it has affected the global population, we want to continue to add features to attract more players who instead of going out, follow pandemic procedures and stay home to play our game.
We had an idea of implementing more menus and shops/upgrades that we weren’t able to given the time limitations. The next steps would be to incorporate those elements to make the game even more interactive and engaging.
