Inspiration
Since our team is formed with members from very diverse backgrounds (China, Mongolia, Mexico, and Japan), we noticed how our confirmation bias and interpretive lens shape our subjective understanding of Coronavirus. The biases on Coronavirus in our mind sometimes cause racial discrimination and Informational asymmetry and we want to change that.
What it does
Through an interactive game and quiz-based information selection, this mobile app provides its users (kids and adults) reliable and relevant information about the current outbreak of Coronavirus. By doing so, we aim to mitigate the effects of bias toward Coronavirus.
How we built it
We used Figma API to create the flow and design of our mobile app and we coded in Python to calculate the score of the quiz within the app.
Challenges we ran into
We didn’t know how to use Figma and have little experience in programming. We learned through google tutorials during the hackathon.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of identifying a real-world pressing issue and coming up with a plausible solution using the technique of divide and conquer. We first identified the targeted audience: American adults and children; this was fundamental to do before designing the app in order to use the appropriate cognitive persuasion method. For children, we used the narrative paradigm to inform the danger of discrimination caused by bias, because appealing to emotion is more effective for children rather than showing a logical approach with statistical data. For adults, facts are more relevant, thus we have 5 sections in which they can learn more about Coronavirus.
What we learned
For most of us, this is the first time we take part in Hackathon. We learned about project planning and design by coming up with an idea and developing a project from scratch.
What's next for CoronaBias
Continue developing the mobile app (improve the overall visual design into more user-friendly and aesthetic) and launch it to the App Store.
