Play the game!: It works best in Chrome and on a desktop. The mobile version will be coming soon! Domain Name

I got the domain name It redirects to my website where I have the game hosted since it would not have been ready in time to host it with that domain.

The inspiration for Corona Hero is the current pandemic we are in combined with the retro theme of VandyHacks. I wanted the game to be a fun twist to the pandemic since it has caused a lot of hard times for a lot of people.

What it does

Corona Hero is a 2D platformer game that allows you to collect toilet paper while fighting off Coronavirus! Every time you collect toilet paper you get 10 points (there was a period where toilet paper was worth it's weight in gold). Masks may appear randomly and can protect you from the coronavirus contact. After the first contact with coronavirus, or after 2 levels the mask will need to be replaced. Soap will give you extra lives because of how important it is to wash your hands.

How I built it

I built it using Phaser.js. It was my first attempt at creating a video game and the Phaser.js made it a little bit easier to accomplish.

Challenges I ran into

I had a relatively difficult time learning Phaser.js. The documentation was difficult because a lot of it was intended for version 2 and I am using the newest version 3. There are so many design and gameplay aspects that you have to keep in mind. It makes it difficult to try to create code that you could scale. I think this is because I am not that good at using the library yet.

I'm also not very good at graphic design. I created the mask and toilet paper and modified the main character as well as the coronavirus gif. The rest of the assets are royalty free assets that anyone can download.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

This game is way more fun than I had anticipated. You can actually play it like a well polished game. It still needs some work, but I can confidently say that it is an actual video game.

What I learned

I learned a lot about game design and what goes into making video games. I also learned a lot about javascript. I already knew some javascript, but I learned a lot more techniques while making this game.

What's next for Corona Hero: Retro Video Game

I would like to eventually make autogenerating levels that get more and more difficult. Right now the difficulty is set by the amount of the virus present. I think I could also make different level backgrounds. One thing that would really complete the game is an online leaderboard. I decided against that simply because I don't know enough yet to keep people from tampering with an online leaderboard.
