Inspiration
The CoroBox project was initially inspired by a similar technology that we discovered in South Korea. Engineers from H Plus Yangji Hospital in Seoul have redesigned smoking boxes into simple test cells. At the same time, we have seen how, in various weather conditions, Czech paramedics do the swabs in simple tents or living containers, without protection other than disposable protective equipment, in which they spend most of the shift and whose consumption is enormous. We decided on a slightly different way of usage. We protect the medical staff in the Corobox against infection.
What it does
Description of the project: Mobile swabbing point (Box) enables safe and contactless testing or swabbing for infectious diseases.
Modular box/unit which can be produced within 3 days. CoroBox has many available extensions upon customer's request such as additional protection of testing subject.
Project goals:
- Maximum protection of medical staff against infection during examination and testing of potentially infected persons
- Increasing the number of tested persons at one sampling workplace in time
- Mobile technology that allows testing outside the medical facility at the site of need or increased incidence of infectious disease
- The reduction of the consumption of disposable medical material
- Protection of test subjects against infection spread in a confined space
Description of the unit: The "CoroBox" is a mobile unit measuring approximately 1.1 x 2.1 x 2.4 m (L x W x H) which is intended for use by healthcare professionals. The examination and possible swabbing take place through the so-called examination wall (inverse method than is used in the case of bio-boxes, when the patient is inside). All contact between the examined person and the medical professional is through communication technology and direct contact between the examined person and the medical professional is thus prevented. The swabbing is then performed via sampling gloves, which are also part of the examination wall. The filter device, which blows air in through a HEPA filter creates an overpressure inside the CoroBox. Overpressure ensures that air cannot flow other than through the ventilation system. CoroBoxes can ideally be connected in parallel, where one filter device can filter air for multiple cells simultaneously. This significantly increases the swabbing capacity in one examination place. CoroBox also has many additional upgrades (optional) in exterior, interior, and additional equipment increasing the safety also for patients.
Operation of one unit: One box is operated by one person (healthcare worker). 2 people are required for handling, settling, and connection of the box.
How we built it
In the beginning, the CoroBox was industrial modular equipment and it never occurred to anyone that it might one day save lives and protect the health of doctors and paramedics.
CoroBox equipment: The CoroBox is equipped with an electrical switchboard and there is a sufficient number of sockets inside the box for connection to the mains. Medical (indoor) and outdoor areas are illuminated with LED lights. The CoroBox does not have its own source of electricity and it is necessary to connect it to the network at the place of use. CoroBox already contains a sufficient number of usable (built-in tables) and storage (shelves) areas from the factory to ensure the necessary administration during testing and sampling. Additional storage can be added. The swabbing box should include a refrigerator to store the samples, laptop and printer. The equipment is not part of the basic configuration. Furthermore, the box is equipped with a communication device for communication between the examined person and the healthcare professional and manual technology for disinfection of the external space and gloves. These devices are part of the CoroBox. The CoroBox will be offered in basic design configuration, with the possibility of extending the protection with additional elements, see below. Due to the modularity of the entire CoroBox concept, it is possible to make almost any modifications in production at the customer's request.
Challenges we ran into
How to maximize the protection of medical staff against infection during examination and testing of potentially infected persons How to increase the number of tested persons at one sampling workplace in time How to through mobile technology allows testing outside the medical facility at the site of need or increased incidence of infectious disease How to reduce consumption of disposable medical material How to protect test subjects against infection spread in a confined space
Mobility: The box can be transported with a pallet truck or forklift. Crane handling is also possible. Once unloaded at the destination, the CoroBox is easy to assemble and operational in a short time.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
CoroBox is Modular & Mobile & Simple for use & Extendable & Environmentally friendly & Nice :) Except for the supply of some components (EU products), CoroBox is a purely Czech product. Most of the modular components are manufactured in the Czech Republic and the cell is then also assembled in the CZ. effective assistance in the fight against the global COVID-19 pandemic.
Possible usage
- Mobile test boxes for temporary sampling points
- Mobile test boxes to ensure efficient sampling at any location (railway stations, concert venues, sports matches and much more)
- Stationary sampling points of the "drive-thru" type (sampling of the vehicle crew)
- Stationary test boxes at sampling points
- Stationary test boxes in the arrival hall of an international airport
- and many others
CoroBox can have other ways of usage after the pandemic.
The project is supported by the Covid19 CZ platform. Covid19 CZ is a joint activity of Czech technology companies, IT enthusiasts and other volunteers focused on
What we learned
If the team of managers, logisticians, producers are motivated to help and willing to leave their job for a while and will find the right doctors and paramedics, almost everything is possible in a very short time. Where is the will, there is the goal close. The time we spent from the first idea & inspiration until we had a built prototype took less than a month.
