Inspiration

Inspiration

In small towns across Punjab, India, local shopkeepers have almost no online presence. If a customer wants to know whether a store has a specific medicine, spice, or grocery item in stock, they have to physically walk in and ask. This isn't unique to Punjab — it's the reality for millions of small shops worldwide. Corner & Co. was built to give these shops a simple, searchable digital presence, in the language their customers actually speak.

What it does

Corner & Co. lets customers search for products across local shops in English or Punjabi, and instantly see which nearby shop has what they need, along with pricing and contact details. Shop owners get their own dashboard to register their store, manage their product inventory, and edit their listings — all without needing any technical knowledge. To keep the platform sustainable for shop owners long-term, Corner & Co. integrates RevenueCat for premium subscription plans that give shops better visibility and featured placement in search results.

How we built it

The backend is built with Flask and MySQL/SQLite (with a custom compatibility layer for free-tier hosting constraints), using Jinja2 for templating, and deployed live on PythonAnywhere. The app is wrapped as a native Android app using Capacitor, and monetization is powered by RevenueCat (@revenuecat/purchases-capacitor) for subscription management and premium shop listings.

Challenges we ran into

Getting Google Play Billing to work reliably for testing required understanding that Play Billing only initializes correctly through Play Store–distributed builds (Internal Testing track), not sideloaded APKs — a debugging process that taught us a lot about the real-world constraints of mobile monetization. Building genuinely useful bilingual search (not just UI translation, but real product-matching across English and Punjabi queries) was also a core design challenge.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

A fully working bilingual product search, a real shop-owner dashboard with CRUD functionality, and a live RevenueCat-powered premium subscription flow — all shipped as a real, testable Android app, not just a prototype.

What we learned

We learned how mobile subscription infrastructure (Google Play Billing + RevenueCat) actually works end-to-end, and how much real-world constraints (like Play Store distribution requirements) shape mobile development decisions.

What's next for Corner & Co.

Onboarding more real local shop owners, expanding language support, and building out analytics for shop owners to see how customers are finding them.
