Inspiration

I was inspired after the coordinators of Technica announced that the UMD Hotel was situated on indigenous land, I realized how important it was to know and recognize the history around us, and the sacrifices people made to get us to where we are today.

What it does

This app educates users on historical facts and makes them aware of the issues around them. It allows them to use that knowledge to then volunteer at, attend, or host events in their area to educate and better the communities around them.

How we built it

After drawing a mockup on paper, I built the project by first creating a small demo version in HTML/CSS/JS. Upon completing it I realized I would have a better chance of completing something high-level using Kotlin/Java in Android Studio.

Challenges we ran into

The emulator for Android Studio would take a very long time to load, setting us back a lot. In addition, some features of Android Studio refused to work properly purely due to bugs in the IDE.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I'm proud that I was able to complete such a large-scale project in a short amount of time. I was also happy with my UI/UX design and all the iconography, wallpapers, and design choices that I created.

What we learned

I learned that sometimes less is more, and making the design too convoluted leads to user-error and general confusion about the product. Keeping it simple is key.

What's next for CoreEdu

I hope to develop a backend database to store info and provide users with more than default text.
