I## 🐚 Inspiration

The inspiration for Coral Quest came from our deep love for the ocean and a desire to create a game that celebrates marine ecosystems while making players feel like they’re truly restoring something meaningful. We envisioned a visually captivating, mobile-first experience where players could engage with the beauty of coral growth — not through combat or cleanup, but through care, rhythm, and progression.

Our team wanted to reimagine environmental gameplay in a way that feels joyful, intuitive, and rewarding, blending bioluminescent art, reef science, and game mechanics into a single immersive loop.

🧠 What We Learned

Throughout the development of Coral Quest, we learned how to:

  • Translate real-world reef restoration into playable metaphors that work on mobile devices.
  • Optimize performance and visual feedback for progression without overwhelming the player.
  • Craft an experience that is short, satisfying, and beautiful — but also extensible for future features (like fashion, deeper stats, or multiplayer).
  • Balance minimal UX text with the need for clarity, motivation, and thematic consistency.
  • Think like narrative designers inside a game loop, not just storytellers outside of it.

🛠️ How We Built It

We built Coral Quest using the following tools and process:

  • Game Engine: Horizon Desktop Editor (with mobile optimization for touch interaction)
  • Design & Art: Hand-drawn coral, glowing AI assets, and layered visual states to represent world transitions
  • UI/UX: Created clean, responsive pop-ups for instructions, stats, and the Bubble Shop
  • Modular Progression System: Reef bases appear every 10 coral polyps; environmental shifts occur every 3 reef bases
  • Thematic Audio + Visual: Custom sound design (optional), bioluminescent lighting, and transitions between the Main World, Bioluminescent World, and Cavern World
  • Scoring: Designed to scale with growth but remain relaxing (possible future math-based scoring enhancements, such as exponential growth curves.

What It Does

Coral Quest is a mobile-first game where players help restore the ocean by catching falling coral polyps and launching them onto reef bases. As players grow their reef, they unlock new reef bases and progress through visually stunning underwater worlds — from a colorful coral reef, to a glowing bioluminescent sea, to a mysterious cavernous deep.

Gameplay is fast, intuitive, and satisfying. Players are guided with minimal text and rewarded with dynamic environment changes and encouraging feedback. The game is designed to be relaxing, beautiful, and meaningful — combining light gameplay with an underlying message of ocean care and regeneration.

Players can track their progress, view stats, and explore the Bubble Shop to collect in-game items like crystals and pearls.

Challenges We Faced

Like any creative build, we faced a few key challenges:

  • Scope Creep: We had so many exciting ideas, but needed to prioritize what would work best for a mobile-first demo.

  • Minimal Text, Maximum Clarity: We worked hard to communicate mechanics and progression in as few words as possible, especially since we transitioned from audio instructions to a pop-up text system.

  • Thematic UI: We challenged ourselves to make every interface feel like part of the ocean — from the soft glow of the Bioluminescent World to the texture of buttons in the Bubble Shop.

  • Progression Feedback: Making players feel rewarded at the right moments — when unlocking reef bases or transitioning between worlds — required careful pacing and creative UI feedback.

Accomplishments That We're Proud Of

  • Designed a complete, mobile-first game loop in a short timeframe, balancing beauty, clarity, and fun.
  • Created three immersive underwater worlds — each with its own visual identity and emotional tone.
  • Built a modular progression system that rewards players with new reef bases and environmental transformations.
  • Crafted intuitive, low-text UI/UX, transitioning from audio-based instructions to elegant pop-up messages.
  • Launched the Bubble Shop as a future-ready system for in-game rewards, with room for expansions like fashion and power-ups.
  • Made reef-building feel rewarding and emotionally resonant, connecting players to ocean care through playful interaction.

What's Next for Coral Quest Mobile

  • Expand the Bubble Shop with new item types like fashion accessories, rare coral types, and seasonal collectibles.
  • Introduce daily and weekly challenges to keep players engaged with new goals and time-based events.
  • Develop power-ups and boosters, such as growth accelerators or environmental shields.
  • Add new worlds beyond the cavern — including volcanic vents, frozen seas, and surreal deep-sea dreamscapes.
  • Enable multiplayer reef-building, allowing friends or global players to collaborate or compete for the healthiest reef.
  • Partner with ocean conservation organizations to incorporate real-world coral reef restoration efforts into gameplay.
  • Launch on additional platforms, including tablet and web, for greater accessibility and community reach.
