Coral
Inspiration
Coral reefs thrive because countless tiny polyps cooperate. We asked: what if daily micro-actions, done together, shift a city’s footprint the same way?
What it does
Helps people see how small sustainable or positive actions add up (fitness, recycling, volunteering) to grow collective impact.
Task feed with small, timely actions. Examples: run laundry after 9 pm, bike 2 km
Every task shows measurable impact in kg CO₂e
Groups for friends, buildings, or campuses. Leaderboards, streaks, weekly challenges.
Personal branches grow into a shared “reef” that visualizes collective progress. Starting with a dead reef and growing it into somethign beautiful
How we built it
Mobile app plus backend for tasks, scoring, and leaderboards.
Impact engine maps tasks to emissions factors and live signals where available, for example grid carbon intensity and routing.
Transparent receipts show sources and formulas behind each saving.
Challenges we ran into
Pay-walls and region limitations.
API availability and reliability. Many sources are fragmented or rate-limited, so we built normalizers and fallbacks.
Clear, credible calculations that non-experts understand.
Incentives that are fun without encouraging spam.
What’s next for Coral
Broader data integrations, more grid regions, transit, and food footprints. Cached fallbacks to reduce API friction.
Partner rewards for top groups, for example bike share, refill stores, energy plans.
Notifications for the top three cheapest hours using forecasts. Optional smart device triggers.
Public reef dashboards for schools, buildings, and councils.
Coral turns everyday tasks into a collective, fun, and measurable way to shrink our carbon footprints, one micro-action at a time.
