Inspiration
Our main inspiration for Coraid was to get kids to play outside together. We understand that children in this current time usually stay at home and game on their devices. We thought it might be beneficial for kids to leave their houses and (touch grass lol) play with their friends, hence the idea. We took inspiration from Pokemon Go as well, but we wanted to add the "friends" aspect more because Pokemon Go does not really have a cooperative aspect to it.
What it does
Coraid is a MMO GPS game that focuses on two things: location and teamwork. Players work together to defeat the bosses and earn rewards. The bosses require for players to be actively moving to different places and solving puzzles (kinda like Destiny irl).
How we built it
Coraid was built using the Unity Game Engine. We also used Google Maps for screenshots and pictures.
Challenges we ran into
This project was especially difficult because none of us really knew how to use Unity. We did not have a lot of experience, so it took a while to learn the material needed to use the engine. Due to this, the project is nowhere near even a prototype, but that is ok.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We managed to complete the hardest part of the game which was the GPS part. Mapping the player's real time location on a map was pretty difficult as well. These aspects were difficult because many of the libraries that we wanted to use (that would make it way easier) were paid. We ended having to use Unity's inbuilt GPS system, which was pretty difficult to implement.
What we learned
We learned that ideas like these a lot more time. We were extremely ambitious when the contest started but when we started actually doing the work, we became burnt out very quickly. We also learned how to use cloud save services like GitHub, so I guess that's good.
What's next for Coraid
We have a lot planned for the future of Coraid. As of right now, the map that Coraid uses is just UCSC, but in the future, we would like to place bosses around the world. We would also like to add AR aspects to the game, making a lot more interactive for the players. Lastly, we would like to add smaller raids and other events to keep players interested and motivated.
