Inspiration

We are a brother-sister duo building CopingStar.

One of us is a retired athlete, and growing up we saw the full cycle of sport up close: the highs, the pressure, the injuries, the setbacks, the comebacks, the quieter periods, and eventually retirement.

What stood out was that the mental side followed every stage of that journey.

That is true for athletes at every level. Whether you compete professionally, play on weekends, train toward a goal, or are moving beyond sport, so much happens mentally both on and off the court.

So we started asking: what if we trained the mind with the same consistency we train the body?

That became CopingStar: mental fitness built around every season of the athlete journey.

What it does

CopingStar turns mental training into a daily habit.

At the core are simple daily practices and exercises around breathwork, visualization, manifestation and affirmations, designed to help athletes regulate, refocus, build confidence and prepare mentally.

The experience adapts to your season: Competing, Off Season, Comeback, or Retired. Each season changes the coaching, exercises and tone of the app.

Progress is designed to feel encouraging rather than punishing. Every completed session lights a star, and over time those stars form constellations.

A streak can be lost. A star cannot.

At its core, CopingStar answers one question: what can I do today to train my mind?

How we built it

We started with the athlete journey, not a feature list.

Our own lived experience gave us the starting point, but we also spoke with other athletes and professionals to test our assumptions and understand how mental needs change across different stages of sport.

That led us to build around seasons first, then create a simple daily rhythm of repeatable exercises rather than a large library users have to navigate themselves.

We were also deliberate about the limits of the product. CopingStar supports mental training, but it is not designed to replace a therapist, coach or mental performance professional. AI is optional and only used in specific exercises.

From there, we kept testing, simplifying and iterating until the experience felt more like training and less like homework.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was deciding where CopingStar should stop.

The mental side of sport can move quickly from everyday pressure and confidence into situations that need a qualified professional, so we had to be deliberate about language, exercises and the role of AI.

We also had to design for very different moments in the athlete journey without making the product feel fragmented.

And because we are a tiny team, seemingly simple things such as breathwork timing, audio cues, navigation and polish often took several iterations to get right.

The challenge was balancing three things at once: useful enough to matter, simple enough to use daily, and responsible enough to know its limits.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that CopingStar went from a personal idea to a real, live product in just two months.

We are also proud of how much we learned while building it. Our team combines lived athlete experience with product, strategy and hands-on technical building. Over the last year and a half, the technical side of the team has been learning to code alongside an experienced engineer, and CopingStar became one of the most complex products we have taken from idea to launch.

There is something special about building a product together that came from experiences we actually lived through as a family.

What we learned

We learned that the hardest part is not adding more. It is deciding what matters enough to keep.

Building and shipping CopingStar in two months forced us to cut ideas, simplify constantly and accept that sometimes you have to ship before everything feels perfect, then improve through iteration.

We also learned that one generic experience would not work across the full athlete journey.

CopingStar only went live today, so the next stage of learning starts now, with real users.

What's next for CopingStar

Now that CopingStar is live, the focus shifts from building to learning.

We want to get it into the hands of athletes, coaches and professionals, understand what people actually return to, and improve the product based on real use.

We also want to deepen the personalization within each season and add more exercises over time.

The goal is to grow without losing what matters most: simple daily mental training that feels useful, personal and easy to come back to.

Impact

At CopingStar, we believe mental fitness shouldn’t be elite access.

Elite athletes may have sports psychologists and mental-performance coaches. Most athletes don’t. CopingStar puts structured mental-fitness training in every athlete’s pocket.

From competition and injury to retirement, athletes face pressure, setbacks and identity shifts. CopingStar turns mental-fitness practices into simple exercises athletes can use every day.

Because training your mind shouldn’t depend on how elite you are.
