Inspiration

Our inspiration was the many people who committed suicide because of the depression and mental health issues that the coronavirus pandemic influenced them to experience.

We wanted to put a stop to the suicide, so we built a website full of activities they could do to get their mind off the pandemic.

What it does

Our project helps users follow the three M's of mental health: maintain healthy relationships, mindfulness, and motivation by keeping them entertained, productive, and enriched while stuck at home during the COVID-19 pandemic.

How we built it

We used Glitch as a platform to code our website in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. We also used the jQuery API and the jsPDF Library in order to construct the DOM (Document Object Model) which made our website interactive. The jQuery and jsPDF allowed the user to download their input into the website (their journal entry) as a PDF file.

Challenges we ran into

Some challenges encountered during project development include using the “.text()” jsPDF method and converting the input field value to a string. We overcame these complications by performing research and asking a mentor for help.

Accomplishments that we are proud of

Accomplishments that we are most proud of would be the journal functionality of the website and also the layout/color scheme we settled on.

What we learned

We learned that focusing on the "big picture" aspects of a project/idea is critical because it forms the foundation of realizing the idea/project. In terms of general STEM learning, we learned more about the major impact the pandemic has had all over the world in regard to mental health and society as a whole. In addition, we learned more about how to use the jsPDF library and gained experience using the jQuery API.

What's next for Cope With COVID

What's next for this project is that we hope to make the journal more personalizable. We would also like to add a user login functionality to the website to begin developing it as more of a mental health social media platform. In the future, adding a wider range of content and content mediums would also enhance the scope of our website.
