Inspiration

Our group was dissatisfied with the quality and selection of food on campus. We wanted to cook our own meals, but did not want to spend the time to search for recipes and learn how to cook them. So we decided to create CookingU, a platform for University students to find and learn simple recipes.

What it does

CookingU gives the user access to a large library of recipes and cooking tutorials. It also features a random meal generator for those times where you're feeling indecisive

How We built it

We built it using the React framework and styled it using CSS3. In addition we experimented with Dialogflow to implement our chat bot feature.

Challenges I ran into

We had trouble managing the layout of the site and implementing animations. However, after hours of hard work and determination we were able to overcome these challenges. Implementing the chatbot using Dialog flow proved to be very challenging as the API was difficult to understand

Accomplishments that We are proud of

We were able to implement all the features we wanted and complete the project within 36 hours. Although we ran into many challenges along the way, we where able to overcome them through perseverance, teamwork and creativity.

What We learned

This was our first Hackathon and we took away a lot from this experience. We learned that ideas change over time and that the final product is rarely the same as what you initially had in mind. By experimenting with Dialogflow, we learned that the Google assistant API is very capable and fun to play with, but difficult to master. We solidified our skills in React and CSS3 and now have the confidence to develop more complicated and innovative projects.

What's next for CookingU

We plan on expanding on the chatbot feature, so the bot can audibly reply, and show the images and ingredients along with with each instruction. The websites' tutorials will have interactive video lessons where the user can stop and ask for help if they get stuck. CookingU's recipe library will expanded when new users upload their recipes to the site.
