Inspiration
Back in high school chemistry, all of us experienced the struggle of memorizing chemical compounds. Despite fully understanding chemistry concepts, sometimes our recall isn’t fast enough to do well on tests. We were determined to make this tedious task engaging and fun for chemistry students by turning it into a classic game; Cooking fever but instead of cooking dishes, you’re dishing out chemicals!
What it does
Reaction Rush is a speed cooking style game, except instead of cooking food, you’re cooking up chemical compounds! It’s your favorite classic cooking game, but with a mix of chemistry! This game allows students to learn their chemical compounds while playing a fast-paced and addictive game.
How we built it
We built Reaction Rush using Python and Pygame. We also drew some of the game assets by hand!
Challenges we ran into
Coming into this challenge, a few of us were unfamiliar with Python or have never even coded in Python before. We were all a bit worried that we would not be able to learn Python in such a short time, but we stepped into the challenge with a positive attitude and tried our best. In the end, we all learned more about Python and completed the game that we planned, even with some extra features built in!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that the game is fully functional, genuinely fun to play, and challenging to beat!
What we learned
This project enhanced our team’s Python and game development skills. We also learned how to work on code as a team and how to effectively divide up tasks for each team member.
What's next for Reaction Rush
We would love to create more levels for Reaction Rush, and add even more elements and compounds! Additionally, we would like to create a progression system, where the compounds start simple at the beginning of a level, and steadily get more and more complex as the game goes on. We imagine that in earlier levels, players would start with only a few elements, and would unlock more and more as they move through the game. Perhaps one day, Reaction Rush could have the entire periodic table to unlock!
