Inspiration
Our biggest inspiration came from one of the most iconic gingerbread characters ever made, Shrek’s Gingerbread Man, and his legendary scream: “THE MUFFIN MANNNNN!” 🧁 We wanted to take that fun and memorable character and create our own twist on the classic Hangman game.

What it does
CookieCrumble 🍪 is a sweet-themed version of the traditional Hangman game. Instead of drawing a stick figure when players guess incorrectly, they slowly break the gingerbread cookie apart piece by piece. Every wrong guess damages another part of the cookie, and if too many guesses are missed, the cookie crumbles completely and it’s game over. 🍬
How we built it
We built CookieCrumble 🍪 using a combination of different tools:
- Unity 2D for game development, animations, and gameplay systems
- Devvit for integrating the game into Reddit
- WebGL Export to make the game playable directly on the platform
- Clip Studio Paint and Photoshop for creating and editing our visual assets
Challenges we ran into
Since this was our first time working with some of these tools, we ran into quite a few challenges during development.
For development, learning Devvit from scratch was probably the biggest challenge. We only had 2 weeks to understand how it worked, while also figuring out how to properly test and deploy the game. Testing each version also took a lot longer than expected because every small change required another upload and test cycle.
On the design side, Unity’s Canvas system gave us a lot of trouble. Some UI elements did not behave the way we expected, and our animations also had issues where the cookie-breaking effects would not trigger properly. A lot of time went into debugging and making sure everything worked smoothly.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The biggest accomplishment is probably that the game actually works and did not break! xD
Even with a very short development period, we managed to create a complete playable game, learn a new platform, and polish it as much as we could. Seeing the cookie crumble exactly the way we imagined was definitely worth all the debugging.
What we learned
Developer:
Learned how Devvit works and how to create experiences for Reddit Learned more about Reddit as a platform since it was completely new to us Improved our workflow for adapting Unity projects for WebGL and online platforms
Designer:
Learned more about Unity 2D animation workflows Learned how to properly set up, troubleshoot, and make animations work inside Unity
What's next for CookieCrumble 🍪
We would love to keep expanding CookieCrumble in the future with more features, such as:
🍪 Customizable cookies and different designs 🏆 Leaderboards and score tracking 🎃 Seasonal themes like Halloween, Christmas, and other holidays ✨ More animations, effects, and surprises for players
For now, we’re just happy our little cookie survived development. Whether it survives your guesses is another story. 🍪
