Inspiration
Cooperative multiplayer online games with environmental interaction are rare.
What it does
Simulates interactions with planets and asteroids (as well as some special encounters!) in space, being affected by Gravity, acceleration, and magnetic fields.
How we built it
A lot of research was put into it, studying practical effects and what potential output each encounter could lead out. The front-end and back-end were both mostly made up of Typescript and Node.JS, with some HTML being involved.
Challenges we ran into
There were often times when maintaining a stable atmosphere for testing the code could not be held due to several influencing factors. The tiniest of hidden details cost us a large amount of time, and a majority of the time lost was due to developer issues and technical problems.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Achieved a pretty good version of multiplayer and had to use live rendering to facilitate/reduce impact on the server side.
What we learned
We gained knowledge of certain choking factors (like the small/hidden details and the developer issues), which gives a good roadmap for next time on what to optimize for when and which products/methods to avoid.
What's next for MagnaGrav
Better and more expansive world, with better implementation of custom physics to present an actual challenge to players.
