Inspiration: The idea for Cook It came from a personal struggle with cooking despite a strong desire to eat better. Discovering appealing meals online or craving specific dishes often led to frustration due to the difficulty of finding recipes, staying organized, and remembering ingredients while shopping. This repeated cycle of wanting better meals but settling for basic food or eating out became the core motivation behind building Cook It.
What it does: Cook It is an AI-powered kitchen assistant that helps users plan, cook, and manage meals in one place. It allows users to upload cookbooks, recipe images, and videos, track pantry ingredients, automatically update shopping lists, generate recipes based on available ingredients, flag potential allergens, and receive real-time cooking guidance through an integrated AI chat assistant.
How we built it: Cook It was built as an AI-first application with tightly connected systems. The pantry, recipe uploads, shopping list, and chat assistant all work together, allowing the AI to understand and modify user data in real time. This unified approach ensures a seamless cooking workflow rather than fragmented tools.
Challenges we ran into: One of the main challenges was reducing the mental friction around cooking while handling the complexity of real-life kitchen behavior. Accurately tracking ingredient usage, building a helpful yet flexible allergy detection system, and designing an AI assistant that could interact across multiple features were key hurdles during development.
Accomplishments that we're proud of: We’re proud of creating an all-in-one cooking ecosystem powered by AI. Key achievements include automatic pantry updates during cooking, support for multiple recipe input formats, a smart shopping list that updates itself, and an AI assistant capable of managing recipes, pantry items, and meal planning through conversation.
What we learned: We learned that most people want to cook better but are discouraged by small obstacles that add up. Automation and intelligent feature integration significantly improve motivation, and AI is most effective when it acts as a supportive companion rather than just a search tool.
What's next for Cook It: Next, we plan to expand premium features, improve live AI-guided cooking sessions, enhance allergy and health-based meal recommendations, and continue refining personalization to make Cook It an even smarter and more reliable kitchen companion.
