Inspiration
With the recent incidents in UNC Chapel Hill, mental health of college students has come to the forefront. We identified a mismatch between demand and access of mental health services in universities: 41% of students suffer from some form of mental health issue, but only 15% of them utilize counseling resources in college. Therefore, we would like to use AI and social media to bridge the gap.
Problem Statement
Urgent Need : University students are experiencing increasing amount of psychological distress that remain unaddressed. Suicide incidents among students is at an all-time high
The Taboo : Students are embarrassed to talk about their feelings with counsellors
Supply-Demand Mismatch : Students are reluctant to seek mental health counseling; while schools lack the means to monitor and cater to students’ needs
What it does
For general student body:
- connect with mental health resources pre-emptively
- start open dialogues about mental health
For students with existing diagnosis of anxiety:
- manage daily mood
- alert trusted personnel when help is needed
For university counsellors:
- lend a listening ear to those struggling with mental health
- monitor the general sentiment of student body
