Inspiration

What inspired us to create this website was we found one in ten adults are affected by depression each year, this makes to be around 18 million according to hopefordepression.org. As many adults are affected, teens included suffer even more with communicating and certain mental health issues. Many people have trouble communicating with others and end up feeling isolated from the world feeling alone, our website wanted to solve that problem and help those in need out by letting them know we are here for them. One motivational text might be the thing they needed to know they are supported and not alone in this battle.

What it does

ConvoCare is a website made to help users with their mental health challenges using different features such as sending different motivational texts, anonymously chatting, and practicing different breathing exercises. When the user signs up on our website they begin to receive different encouraging texts daily as a meaningful reminder to stay motivated. Another feature our website offers is an anonymous chat known as Aidchat, where users can chat with another who’s struggling and is feeling the same way as them. They can chat with them one on one about their problems and anything that makes them feel comfortable and safe, knowing they have someone to talk to. This can help users with their communication skills and becoming more open with their problems as a way to cope. And lastly, Breathe Pacer is a feature in our app that has the user do breathing exercises through youtube tutorials to lower stress and anxiety. It can be used to relax and wind down or energize yourself and improve endurance.

How we built it

We used firebase ad socket.io as well as html/css/js to build the website.

Challenges we ran into

Some challenges we ran into was figuring out how to send texts to the user. Overtime we switched to push notifications. Another problem that we ran into was constructing the chat for our website. We had to restart multiple times due to errors.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Through this project, we learned how important it is to have support. Many people struggle with mental health because they feel isolated and alone, this causes them to feel unmotivated and leads to other problems in life. A simple notification isn’t just a text but a reminder to the user to not give up and it’s never too late to get better and back on track. Another thing we learned was the importance of teamwork and time management. With different time zones and only a day to work on this, we each collaborated on an aspect of the project to make it come together. We had to set aside time and commit to our parts to complete this project to the best of our abilities.

What's next for ConvoCare

Moving forward with ConvoCare we hope to help more people in need with our website’s features. Over time ConvoCare can develop into chatting with a professional mental health specialist instead of just another person. Moreover, ConvoCare can expand its anonymous chat feature even more by initiating three-person chats to simulate an online therapy group. In addition we want users to be able to receive kind text messages not just notifications. ConvoCare can expand all of its features in more ways and can add any additional helpful traits with more time in the future.
