Inspiration
As a freelance developer, I lost thousands to unfair contract clauses—no legal budget to review them. I saw fellow US/EU small business owners face the same, so I built DraftPilot to level the playing field.
What it does
DraftPilot empowers freelancers/small businesses to upload contracts (AI flags risky clauses), generate jurisdiction-specific templates (US state/EU country tailored), and send for e-signature—all in one platform.
How we built it
We used React for the UI, Node.js for backend logic, and integrated legal clause databases for US/EU compliance. We designed a dual-panel review interface (document preview + AI analysis) for usability.
Challenges we ran into
Aligning legal clauses with 50+ US states/EU countries was complex—we had to validate each jurisdiction’s contract law defaults to ensure accuracy. Mobile-responsive document rendering also took iterative testing.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Creating a tool that makes legal contract work accessible—no law degree needed. The redline color-coding system (risk/ambiguity flags) has been praised for its clarity by early users.
What we learned
Legal tech requires balancing usability with precision—small wording changes impact compliance. We also learned how to design for cross-jurisdictional users with diverse legal needs.
What's next for this project
Expand to more EU/US jurisdictions, add a clause library for custom contracts, and integrate real-time legal updates to keep templates compliant with changing laws.
